Leighton Clarkson joins from Premier League side Liverpool

The Dons have further strengthened their squad with the arrival of creative midfielder, Leighton Clarkson who joins on a season long loan from Liverpool, pending international clearance.

The 20-year-old joined the Liverpool FC Academy at the age of six and signed a long-term contact with The Reds in 2020.

An England Under 20 international, he progressed through the youth ranks at Liverpool, becoming a regular in the U23 side before making his debut for the first team in an FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury in February 2020. He made his first appearances in the Champions League later that year against FC Midtjylland.

A technically gifted player, Leighton spent part of last season on loan at his hometown club, Blackburn Rovers FC, making seven appearances for the Championship side.

“As you can imagine Leighton has had a very high standard of coaching within the LFC Academy and he has already represented Liverpool at first team level in the FA Cup and Champions League, said manager Jim Goodwin of his latest arrival.

He continued: “He is a ball playing midfielder who always makes himself available as an option for his teammates. He’s brave in possession and at the right times is willing to try the difficult pass which some midfielders don’t always have the ability or courage to attempt. That is something we will continue to encourage.

“We’re very grateful to Liverpool for their assistance in making this loan possible and hope they will see Aberdeen as a suitable club for some of their young prospects to continue their development in the future.”
