The Manager reflects on the Dumbarton win

13 July 2022

It was another satisfactory evening for Jim Goodwin as he watched his side make it two wins out of two in their Premier Sports Cup Group, beating Dumbarton 2-0 at Pittodrie.

“As on Sunday at Peterhead, I was very pleased with application and professionalism that the players showed, but obviously, we would have liked to score more goals.

“You often hear managers saying, “At least we created the chances,” and yes, that is important. We are getting in good areas, some of the build up play is really good, a lot of what we’re working on in training is coming to fruition which shows the players are listening and the message is getting through. But we want to be giving the fans a few more goals to cheer.

“I thought the support was brilliant actually. They showed that they clearly enjoyed some of the football that we put on but all that was lacking for them was another three or four goals. Sometimes in the group stage, the goals can be important and the players are well aware of that, so that was a little bit frustrating for us.

“Christian was especially frustrated because as I said to him afterwards, he had one of those days where he could have stayed out there until midnight and it wouldn’t have gone in the net for him. He was very unlucky but I have to give him credit, he scored two at Peterhead might have had a double hat-trick tonight, but it didn’t go his way.

“Some of that is down to his finishing, but you have to give credit to the opposition too, they got boys on the line, the goalkeeper has made good saves too. He did score a great goal early on that was disallowed and I must say that the referee got that one right, with Matty being offside. But that summed up Christian’s night.”

Ylber Ramadani made a very accomplished Dons debut despite only training with the squad on Monday for the first time.

“I was delighted with Ramadani because he’s only had two training sessions with us. Graham Kirk our sport scientist has been working hard with him while he was waiting to arrive, making sure he was sticking to his fitness programme and you could see tonight, he’s a very fit boy.

“It wasn’t my intention to give him the full 90, but he wanted to stay on, he was enjoying it. He’ll get better with games. You can see the leadership qualities that he has, he’s a senior international for Albania who are no mugs, so he’s a proper player. He only met the boys for half an hour before the first training session but as soon as we got on the pitch he was demanding things from them, which is just what you want as a manager.

“The character is a big part of my recruitment process, we want good people and good leaders as well as them being good footballers. Every player we’ve brought in, there’s no ego, they’re willing to dig in and work hard for the team, some have been captains at different clubs, Stewart, Scales, Ramadani.

“We have a team full of leaders, which is brilliant for me because it means it doesn’t always have to be my voice that’s demanding things, because they’re doing it with one another.”

Hopes are high that there will be another addition to the squad shortly too.

“Luis Lopes is clearly a player we like. We feel we are getting close, but there are lots of bits and pieces of red tape that have to be dealt with before we can talk about him as our player. Things are moving in the right direction and hopefully we might have positive news there in the next 48 hours.”
