Carrie Doig | "It has been amazing."
Sunday saw long-serving Aberdeen Women’s player Carrie Doig play her final for the game for The Dons after she announced that she would be retiring. Carrie, replaced Kelly Forrest, who was also playing her final game, in the second half and was handed the captain’s armband.
Speaking after the game, Carrie reflected on her final season with The Dons:
“We have to take the positives out of the season, finishing fifth in our first season in the SWPL1 is tremendous. It is what we set out to do at the start of the year and we are really proud that we have made it this far. We are delighted.
“Motherwell had something to play for in the game. We got back into it and I thought for the first part in the second half we were in control. They pushed on to the end, right to the final whistle to get what they needed.
“It was really special for me to come on and to wear the captains armband. I was nearly crying! I didn’t expect it at all, I was just delighted to get onto the pitch. When I was given the armband, it was a really special moment for me, to be able to captain the club I have been at for many years.
“It has been an amazing journey with the club. I have achieved more than I could have ever dreamt of. Getting the chance to play at Pittodrie was amazing. They are such a good group of girls. After we got relegated a few years ago, to go and get back to back promotions and to get back into this league, where we belong, it has been amazing.”
Everyone at AFC wishes Carrie all the best in her retirement.
