Aberdeen Women are in Scottish Cup Quarter-Final action this Sunday as they host Celtic at the Balmoral Stadium. The Dons have won both their games so far in the tournament 4-2, defeating Glasgow Girls & Women and Spartans by that score line. Emma Hunter and Gavin Beith’s side go into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw with Spartans last Sunday in the league.

Captain Kelly Forrest also previewed Sunday’s game, to the interview on RedTV, please click here.

Assistant coach Claire Garret previewed Sunday’s cup tie with Celtic:

“We have identified as a group that our performances haven’t been at the high level we had in the earlier part of the season but we are managing to get results which at this level is the key part to getting the results on the board. We would have preferred to have had three points against Spartans last weekend, we came away with a draw in the end. Emma Hunter alluded to it at the end of the game we are probably in the strongest position out of those two clubs, we are still in fifth place, it is in our hands to continue to stay there and try to push to that.

“Having three games in a week brings its challenges. The occasion against Rangers was fantastic, the adrenaline that came during and after the match as well as the hype that came afterwards was fantastic to see but that has a knock on affect. To get a point against Spartans after the week we had, we will take that, rather than coming away with nothing.

“If we looked at the start of the season that we would have been in the quarter-finals then we definitely would have taken that. It is an  opportunity for the players to show what they can do in a one off game, that means so much and to get to a semi-final would be a fantastic achievement.

“We always want to strive to do the best we can and we want to try and win as many games as we can. The cup brings something different, it does maybe bring less pressure because it is a one off game. We have to be brave, we have to attack the game where possible and we have to go and execute our game plan.

“Our first game of the season was against Celtic at the Balmoral Stadium, it was a big occasion for us, it was our first game in SWPL1, we held our own and gave a good account of ourselves. When we played them down there, it wasn’t until the 80th minute that we conceded, we were really disappointed with the result in the end after all our effort and hard work. These are learning opportunities and we have grown from that.

“If you look at our performances recently, we have come away with a draw or a win from those types of games where in the past we might have lost. Hopefully we have the confidence to attack the game and take us into the semi-final.

“We are seeing things change around us in terms of the infrastructure we have and what is being supported. Playing a game at Pittodrie was another milestone in our journey with the club. It is now about having consistent performances in this league and we are starting to get there. We are showing a real resilience in our play and the ability to grind out those wins when it is a tough game. Every game is tough in this league and we appreciate that but with the talent we have got, we believe that we can go out and challenge. The cup gives us this opportunity to do that on a one off occasion.

“We have spoken a lot about the fans and we want to go and really inspire that next generation of fans to come and watch us a team. The occasion at Pittodrie we want to bring the fans to the Balmoral Stadium and to come and support us on Sunday. We want to make sure that we put on a good performance for the fans and they are apart of this journey along with us too.”
