Aberdeen Women return to league action this Sunday after last week’s game with Glasgow City was postponed. The Dons go into the game having won four games in a row, with their latest victory coming over Spartans in the Scottish Cup. This will be the third meeting between the sides this season with both teams having won a game each. The Dons triumphed over Motherwell back in August in the SWPL Cup, running out winners by a goal to nil. The Lanarkshire side won in the league back in November, when they defeated The Dons 4-3 in a thrilling game at Bothwellhaugh.

Co-manager Emma Hunter, previewed Sunday’s game at the Balmoral Stadium:

“We’re coming up against a Motherwell team that have strengthened since we played them here in the League Cup at the start of the season. They have been progressing really well under Paul Brownlie and I think we can expect a very difficult game. We are fighting over the same spot in the league and they are only just ahead of us at the minute so they will be desperate to beat us to the three points.

“We learned a lot of valuable lessons when we lost to them in November but we also take a lot of confidence into today’s game from winning our last four matches.

“A win would see us go ahead of Motherwell in the table so there is a great incentive to get the three points. It would also give us some security in the league as the bottom half of the table is very congested, so every three points you pick up can take you that bit closer to safety. Every team in that bottom half is looking to take points off each other and they are all capable of beating one another.

“We have some difficult opponents and big games coming up with Rangers and Glasgow City in the league to play before our Scottish Cup quarter-final against Celtic. A win today would give us a huge boost going into those tough matches and it should also give us the belief that we can take something from those top sides.

“Motherwell showed when we played them away from home how dangerous a team they can be and today will be another very difficult game. They had home advantage when they beat us last time out and hopefully with the help of the Red Army we can use being back at the Balmoral to grab a win this afternoon.”

Midfielder Elidh Shore, who scored in the Scottish Cup victory over Spartans, also previewed the game with Motherwell:

“When you’re winning games the confidence in the squad is always going to be high. It has been a season of ups and downs for us so far but when you’re on a good run you can see the confidence go up and you feel it rising in yourself as well.

“It has been a massive step up coming into the top flight and we always knew that would be the case. When you actually get to play in the league you notice that step up even more so it has maybe taken us a bit of time to get used to the levels in the league. You get tested every single week at this level but we’re feeling a lot more confident in our own ability to compete now than we were at the start of the season. I think individual confidence can be helped by the team performances and results. I feel I’ve been playing a lot better during the recent run of results and the fact we’re winning probably shows that we are all playing better and more confidently”.

“We had a bad run of results towards the end of last year and when you go through a run like that you just have to learn from the experience. We’ve learned a lot from that run of defeats and looking back, I think it was important for us to go through that as a team. The form we’re in at the moment maybe shows that we did learn from that bad run and we can take confidence from that too.”
