Jonny Hayes | St Johnstone Reaction

“St Johnstone go 1-0 up and then they sit back and defend like most teams would do. We tried to take the game to them, we had a few chances, not too many clear cut chances but enough to win the game. We scored a perfectly good goal which was ruled out. We should have come away with  the three points.

“It has been a tough few days with Stephen, Allan and Henri all leaving. We all had a good relationship with them, they were brilliant to work under, they worked their socks off and it was sad to see them lose their jobs off the back of the team under performing. I have been in football long enough to know that you half expect things the way that results are going. We came in on Sunday morning to do our recovery and some of the boys were going to do some training, it was still a bit of a shock. As a player group we understand that we have to bear the brunt of that. There was no lack of effort from the staff at all. They had a great relationship with the players and it is shame that they didn’t keep their jobs longer.

“There is a collective responsibility throughout the whole football club, that is how we operate. We all feel a bit down because it is someone that we all had a good relationship with that has lost their job. We need to look forward, there is no time to dwell on it. We had a game on Tuesday that we should have won and we have a game on Saturday where we will go and try and pick up three points.

“I am not one who harps on about referring decisions or other things not going our way but there has been little things that have cost us, that could have been the difference between six-nine points over the past number of weeks. It does seem like we have had a number of decisions go against us recently, it adds to the frustration of us players that we are not picking up enough points. We are not getting away from the performances and we know that they could have been a lot better over the past number of months. There are a little things that add up and it is frustrating.

“Every time we go out as Aberdeen Football Club there is an onus on you to preform well. I don’t think that there is any revenge or redemption on our minds on Saturday against Motherwell.

“The league is tight. We have got a decent squad. Barry in the meantime is more than capable of looking after the group. We just got to take it game by game. There will be more than enough chances to pick up some points and push up the table. We have got to look up the table, we can’t look down. We are where we are, we need to look forward.

“The beliefs of the club, right from the top down, we all move in one direction. Barry is brilliant to work under, I have played with him as well. We worked with him at the back end of last season and his training sessions were brilliant. I don’t think that there is any lack of stability right now. Barry will come in with Scott and take over the reigns for however long is needed. I don’t think that there are any big changes needed apart from a big improvement on the park.

“I thought Connor Barron played very well. I have been impressed with him. He has come back from his loan spell, I had seen clips of him and had heard he was doing well. In his first training session he was brilliant and straight away that justified the reason to bring him back. He came on in tough circumstances at the weekend, he did well in his debut as well and he probably would have started the next game as well if it wasn’t for illness. His attitude is brilliant. You see the hours he puts in, he is never away from the training ground. I am glad he is getting the recognition because he is a fantastic player.”
