Reaction "Last minute winners are always special"

Following the breathless end to the game at the Tony Macaroni Arena, Stephen Glass was understandably delighted with his side’s last gasp winner.

“Last minute winners are always special but for the fans today, they’ve had a lot of emotion pent up for the last 18 months and I think any team’s fans would have reacted the same way in those circumstances. You don’t want supporters coming onto the pitch, but I think in these exceptional circumstances we’ve been living through, you can understand what happened.

“We were absolutely delighted to give that goal and that moment to the fans. The backing they gave us, in the second half especially when we were shooting into that end, it drove the team on. I think the fans could see that there was something coming as well and it goes hand in hand.

“Supporters drive players on and players get the fans going in turn and we’ve all lived without that for a long time. I think across the game, we’ll see a bigger percentage of exciting games this season now fans are back because everybody has been desperate for football to be back in front of crowds. I can’t wait for the grounds to be full again.”

It was the proverbial game of two halves, perhaps not unexpectedly given that Aberdeen made six changes from the team that started against Breidablik last Thursday.

“The changes were a reaction to last Thursday, far more so than looking towards next Thursday. A couple of the boys had knocks that needed looking after, so it wasn’t a case of trying to be clever by any means, we’re not good enough for that.

“It’s about protecting the players and getting the best out of all of them over a period of time, not just two or three weeks. The physicality of last Thursday’s game, the amount of travelling, that was what played into the selection.

“First half, our performance was a little bit slow and that allowed them to dictate, but off the back of the travelling and making the changes, that might be understandable. The more important thing was the response from the group in the second half, which was excellent.

“It’s important to be patient with the players who’ve not played a lot and as a coaching staff, it was important to be understanding of the level of performance in the first half.

“We didn’t make big changes at half-time but we allowed the boys to grow into the game and they got their rewards in the end, particularly for the work they’ve put in, not just into this game, but ever since we came back to training.

“They’ve done all that’s been asked of them, work ever so hard and not had much playing time. That came today and in the end, they got the result their efforts have deserved. I’m delighted for the group as a whole.

“Played two and won two is a good start, but we’d have liked another clean sheet as well and a bit more comfortable an afternoon. But if you can’t get that, and you rarely get that at Livingston, then a last minute winner is a nice way to finish it. We’ve got a good group of players, they’re hungry to win games, but there’s a lot of work still to be done, we want to keep building.”
