The Club can this evening confirm goalkeeper Tomáš Černý has signed a one-year contract extension that will see him remain part of the AFC first team squad for the 2020/21 season.

Tomáš will continue to work in a very strong AFC Goalkeeping team with number one Joe Lewis and Scotland U17 international Tom Ritchie, under the guidance and watchful eye of Head of Goalkeeping Gordon Marshall.

The vastly experienced keeper, who was the only first team squad member out of contract this summer, was seen as an essential signing due to the nature of his role.

The Czech Republic U21 international joined Aberdeen two years ago from Partick Thistle, during which time he has formed a strong professional and personal relationship with the Dons captain.

The 35-year-old made his Aberdeen debut at Easter Road in the 2-1 win against Hibernian in February 2019 when he came off the bench to replace the injured Lewis. At the end of that season Tomáš made his full debut, again at Easter Road, when the Dons claimed another 2-1 win on the final day of the campaign.

AFC Goalkeeping Coach, Gordon Marshall, is very pleased to see Tomáš agree his new deal during what is a challenging time for the Club.

“We’re glad we have managed to reach an agreement with Tomáš because he has done well and was deserving of another extension to his contract.

“He is someone who really pushes Joe with the standards he sets at training. The way he goes about his business is very professional. And that is why the younger ones can learn from him as he sets a great example. He is a player who is very well liked and respected by everyone in the dressing room.”

Tomáš started his career at old European foes Sigma Olomouc in his homeland before joining Hamilton Academical where he helped them reach the SPFL Premiership. After spells in Europe with CSKA Sofia and Ergotelis, Černý came back to Scotland and joined Hibernian, before moving to Firhill. His fine performances there saw him named the club’s player of the year in 2016 and helped them to a top-six placing the following season.

In total the stopper has made 321 senior appearances throughout his career, with 112 shut-outs.
