ABERDEEN ARE CHAMPIONS OF SCOTLAND AGAIN

Aberdeen travelled to Tynecastle looking to seal the League title in Edinburgh, four years after clinching the title in the same city. Prior to the match Willie Miller, who was celebrating his 29th birthday, was named Scottish Player of the Year. It was another defender who grabbed the headlines however as local loon, Stewart McKimmie, claimed his first goal for the club since signing from Dundee in December. Barely five months at the club and he has won a European Super Cup medal and a Championship medal and he still has the Scottish Cup to look forward to. Hearts dominated the opening hour and the Dons had Jim Leighton to thank for a string of fine saves that kept his side in the game, but McKimmie’s goal was enough to take the points and the title. This made up for the early League Cup flop and the disappointing European exit. The team now has four league matches remaining before facing Celtic in the season finale at Hampden.

MILLER NAMED PLAYER OF THE YEAR

After captaining his side to another League title, Willie Miller can now look forward to the Cup Final and before that he will collect The Scottish Player of the Year award at a dinner in Glasgow on Monday evening. He reflected on the season and despite this evenings’ success he said, “It was a big disappointment to go out to Porto in the European semi. It hurt that we didn’t play well, but it’s exciting that we will be playing in the European Cup next season and hopefully add the Scottish Cup to this season.”

WALES SHOCK ENGLAND WITH RARE WIN

England and Wales met tonight at the Racecourse Ground as the last ever Home International Championship took an interesting turn. Hero of the night was Manchester United’s 20-year-old striker Mark Hughes. The youngster, who was making his Welsh debut, scored the only goal of the match after 17 minutes in front of only 14,350 fans. With one round of matches to go any of the four nations could claim the title. It was only the 14th win in 97 matches for Wales.

SPORT TONIGHT ON BBC 1

If you couldn’t make Tynecastle tonight then there was no shortage of sport on BBC1. A John Wayne movie, Rio Lobo, was sandwiched between The Best of Torvill & Dean and Our Henry’s 50th – a dinner in honour of Boxer Henry Cooper. You could then watch Sportsnight, featuring Wales v England and World snooker.

PHIL STALLS AT NUMBER TWO

Phil Collins is looking for his second solo number one hit eighteen months after You Can’t Hurry Love topped the UK charts. However, in the country of his birth, Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) has stalled at number two. He has better luck across the Atlantic where the song currently tops the charts.

RUMOURS SAY HE’S BANKRUPT

Seven years after Fleetwood Mac released the album Rumours, drummer and founder member Mick Fleetwood yesterday filed for bankruptcy in an LA court. The action has left many stunned as Rumours has become one of the bestselling albums on the planet. Fleetwood blamed bad advice on Australian real estate, but admitting spending $8m on drugs probably didn’t help his finances either.
