BOBBY Wilson was the golden oldie of the competitors at the Aberdeen FC Former Players Association’s annual golf outing on Friday.

Now aged 85, Bobby was in the Dons side that beat St Mirren 2-1 in the 1955 Scottish League Cup final at Hampden. He was delighted to meet up with a host of fellow former Pittodrie heroes at the outing, which was hosted at Aberdeen’s Craibstone Golf Club.

“I’m always happy to accept the invite to the golf day,” said Bobby, who also played for Norwich City and was the captain of the original Accrington Stanley when they went defunct in 1966.

“It gives me the chance to catch up with some old pals and also chat to some of the players who were at Pittodrie after I left.

“It’s great that Aberdeen give us the chance to do that, it doesn’t happen with some of my former clubs.” Gothenburg Great John Hewitt, Walker McCall, Jocky Scott, Darren Mackie and Jimmy Wilson were among the other well known faces among the field of 56 golfers who competed.

Former Dons defender David Robertson even flew over from India, where he is now manager of Real Kashmir FC, to take part.

Up for grabs was the Tattie Trophy, which is named in honour of late Dons legend Neale Cooper and donated by the tournament’s main sponsors Saltire Energy.

This year’s winners were the AFC Community Trust team comprised of captain and former Dons defender Robbie Hedderman, George Wyatt, Philip Henderson and James Bream. A raffle raised £600, which will be donated the charity chosen by Neale Cooper’s family, the Frank Kopel Dementia Charity.

Former Aberdeen striker Walker also helped to organise the event. He said: “We had a fantastic day. “I would like to thank Saltire Energy and Derek Cruickshank, the manager of Craibstone Golf Club and the AFC Heritage Trust for their support, without which we would be unable to stage the golf day.”

The AFCFP’s plan to hold another golf competition next year. If you are a former Aberdeen player, or would be interested in sponsoring the event, contact Stewart Eaton, of the AFC Heritage Trust, on mobile 07773158537 or via email stewart.eaton.abz@gmail.com
