Graeme Shinnie Interview

30 January 2018

the skipper this week spoke to the RedMatchday editor

“I thought in the first half against Kilmarnock we were caught in possession too many times which led to us giving away needless possession. We were giving the ball away in areas that they wanted it and they were countering on us well.

“The first half showed what Kilmarnock wanted to do and how well they were set up and how well drilled they are. Their manager has them playing exactly the way he wants them to play. in the first half we maybe played into their hands a bit too much and were giving the ball away in areas that they wanted it and they were countering on us well.

“Come the second half, we were doing things better, we were getting balls out wide and getting balls in the box and asking a lot more questions of them. We put a lot of pressure on them. Second half we did things a lot better than we had done in the first.

“We had a bit more urgency in our game. We encouraged that from each other at half time.

“On Sunday Ross County like us put in a better second half performance. So both teams will be looking to start the game better tomorrow night.

“The position they are in, they will be fight harder than they have ever fought before. They will want to turn it around as quickly as possible and they will want to try and get back to winning ways.

“We know what they will be coming at us with, but we also know what we have got in our dressing room. If we can play to the top of our ability then hopefully we have enough to get a positive result.

“We know it will be a very tough game.

“We are at the stage of the season when you want to keep rolling over the wins as much as you can. I have spoken about the disappointment at Ibrox but to fight back the way we did against Kilmarnock in the second half was massive for us.

“The first goal came after a good header from Scott, it hits the bar and Adam, as he has done so often, is there to knock the ball over the line. It was a bit of a scrappy goal to get us back into the game and then Scott produced a piece of brilliance. And then Niall scores a brilliant goal as well.

“Scott’s goal was a bit like my goal against Limassol! Apart from mine had a bit more swerve on it…

“Actually where I was, I did not realise just how much movement there was on it. In training Scott is all about sheer power when it comes to shooting. And that is what he did. As I say where I was standing I did not realise the movement on it, the power he had on it. it was incredible. It was such a good goal.

“The manager said it shows where Scott’s game is at and how confident he is.

“He has been a real shining light for us.

“His football is different class but so is his attitude.

“He is everything you would want from a young player coming through

“He has not got an ego. He is not full of himself. He gets down to work. After the goal, he was telling everyone to get back into position and focus. His attitude in the games that he has played in so far have been so good.

“I was so delighted for Danny Rogers. He has had to be so patient and had to wait for his chance. I thought he was brilliant on Saturday considering it was his first start for the club. There were plenty of questions asked of him. It was not a quiet debut to try and get through as there was plenty of stuff to be done by him and I thought he handled it very well. it is a game he should be proud of.

“Dominic Ball also came in for his first start in midfield. At Celtic Park he filled in at right back. He is a bubbly character and a good guy to have about the place. He did well when he came on at Ibrox. That is what players coming into the side need to do. Scott McKenna was the same when he got his chance and he grabbed it. Dom come in on Saturday and can be pleased with his performance.

“It shows the squad that we have. Players are coming into the team from not having played much and are impressing.

“This is the part of the season where you need your squad. It is a very tough period on heavy pitches so all teams will have to deal with injuries and suspensions start to kick in as well. You are always going to need your squad and our boys are stepping up.”
