Greg Tansey | Rangers preview

28 November 2017

The Aberdeen midfielder spoke to afc.co.uk on Tuesday to preview the week ahead.

“Although we made the game a bit harder for ourselves that we might have, it was still a very good result on Sunday. We got off to a great start with the goal in under a minute. It was a great finish from Kenny. We built on that for the rest of the half and got the second. We came out of the traps very well in the second half, should have had a goal. When you are 3-0 up it is pretty much game over. They have then got back into the game. As I say we made it a harder for ourselves but thankfully Stevie has come up with a goal and we got over the line.

“Overall it was another good away performance.

“It is the first full 90 minutes I have had in a while. It has been frustrating with injuries and not being fully fit. However, I am starting to feel back to myself now in terms of fitness and I am looking to play as many minutes as I can going forward.

“When you come into a new club, you want to hit the ground running so it is very frustrating to pick up a little niggle which stops you from performing at the top of your game.

“That is what happened and eventually I had to have the operation on my hernia. I have never really had an injury before in my career and touch wood it will be the last. So I have been a bit out of my comfort zone because I am not used to being on the treatment table. It happens though to almost all players at some point in their careers and it is something you just need to learn from. I have worked really hard with the physios to get back up to speed and I am still doing my rehab before training, etc so I am feeling stronger than ever.

“Even when you are fully fit it can still take a while to settle into a new club. New players, new systems. It can take a while to get used to everything. Before the injury I had a run of games in the team and I was feeling like I was getting to know my surroundings a lot better. But then unfortunately I had to get the operation. I had no choice.

“I am not the first and I won’t be the last player to come to a new club and get injured. I have put that behind me now and I am looking to move forward and show everyone what I can do.

“It has been a very stop start season with all the internationals breaks. We are in December and we have only played 13 or 14 games. Not just for myself, but from the point of view of the whole team, there is a lot more to come during the rest of the season. We have a lot of games going forward to prove this.

“I know I need to perform well if I am going to keep my place in the side. With the quality we have in this squad you are always looking over the shoulder. That is the way it should be. That is what drives you on and makes you a better player.

“We are playing a lot of big games in December, playing teams in and around us. It is up to us to prove that we are better than those team. This week we have two massive games coming up one after another against Rangers and then we also play Hibs, Hearts, St Johnstone and Celtic this month.

“It is a period I enjoy. I think it was two years ago when I scored four goals in three games during December. One penalty against Aberdeen and three free kicks! Two against Hamilton and one against Ross County. I tend to go through spells of scoring one after another. It is always the way I have it for whatever reason so hopefully if I can get my first goal for Aberdeen I will go on and get few more.

“I have had a few assists and that is important. It is something I look at. I thought I should have had an assist for the second goal on Sunday! I checked the stats on my app straight away on my phone after the game! I think with it going down as a Broadfoot own goal means that Stevie May might have it.

“Watching the Aberdeen v Rangers game last season, you could sense the atmosphere. As a player these are the game you want to be involved in, big games in front of big crowds. So I am looking forward to the week ahead.

“Last season I scored in the 2-1 win against Rangers at Inverness. It was a big game that we needed to win. Unfortunately, things did not materialise the way we wanted after that result.

“I am enjoying life here. I am living just outside the centre, about 20 minutes. I am settling in. I enjoyed living in Inverness and had many good years there but it is nice to explore a new city, there are a few more things going on.”
