Motherwell v Aberdeen in the League Cup

Previous meetings between Motherwell and Aberdeen in the League Cup have traditionally been close affairs.

The sides have met on 19 occasions in this competition, with Motherwell winning nine of those, Aberdeen nine and there was one draw. Aberdeen have scored 38 goals and conceded 35.

In the early years of the competition, it was the Lanarkshire club that held the upper hand when the competition originally had the sectional stages.

The Dons most convincing win came in a 4-0 win at Pittodrie in 1962, while both Aberdeen legends Jimmy Mitchell and Paddy Buckley made their debuts for the Dons in the meeting at Fir Park in August 1952.
Interesting enough three out of the last four meetings in this competition have taken place at the Quarter Final stage.

In 2005 Brian Kerr's goal separated the sides as Jimmy Calderwood’s team crashed out of the competition. Kerr's superb 25-yard drive put Well ahead early on. Jamie Smith was immediately denied by a brilliant Graeme Smith double save after the Dons forward won a penalty whilst Zander Diamond was sent off late on.

In the last meeting, also at Fir Park, also saw Aberdeen reduced to ten men. Joe Shaughnessy received a red card after only 12 minutes. John Sutton had a goal disallowed and Shaun Hutchinson struck the crossbar from a corner before Andrew Considine headed the Dons ahead. And Jonny Hayes cemented Aberdeen's semi-final place by firing home on the break in injury-time. The famous victory proved even more significant when Derek McInnes’ men went on to lift the Cup at Celtic Park against Inverness CT.
