U20s Reaction | Dunfermline | Paul Sheerin
Paul Sheerin’s U20 side had another good win on Tuesday night as they beat Dunfermline 4-0. It was the youngsters third win in a row as they continue to finish the season strongly. The coach spoke to RedTV after the game:
“I thought in the first half, similar to the recent Rangers game in Stirling, we were spooked a bit by their movement. We also struggled with their shape as well. Sometimes when we face something a bit different we are a little slow to react. They played 4-4-2 last time and we expected the same tonight.
“The players have to be able to adjust on the pitch and I don’t think we done that well enough. It is something they need to learn to do as they develop.
“I spoke to them at half time and made a couple of little tweaks and I thought we were much better in the second half without being great.
“But once we score the first goal we blow them away after that.
“Visibly you could see that a pressure had been lifted and we smelt blood. We were able to take full advantage of being in the ascendancy when we scored.
“I also have to say Joe Nuttall was a factor as well when he came on. He was a real threat and offered a presence. His physicality and height caused them all sorts of problems and he was also willing to run in behind. Credit to big Joe, he made a real impact on the game.
“Seb Ross also coming on and getting his goal was brilliant. I just felt there was a freedom during those last 20 minutes and it looked like they enjoyed the last part of the game. We looked a completely different team.
“Joe deserved his goal whilst Frank gives you that bit of quality. He showed that with his goal. He also had a brilliant bit of skill when he stood on the ball in the corner and then flicked it past his marker. He has great skill and can produce those qualities. We have asked him though can you score more goals? He is now scoring more regularly which is a real positive.
“I did not think we were as good as we have been the past couple of weeks but we have come away with a clean sheet. Young Jevan Anderson came in and did well.
“The first half of the season was tough but I thought we came back from the break and were good. We had good results against Celtic and Rangers. We looked more like a team. We then had a little dip against Dundee United and Hibs which was frustrating but we have asked younger ones to come in and step up to the plate and they have done that well. There will be dips again but we have seen improvement and that is the most important thing.
“We always talk about developing them and I have also looked at my own ways. I felt I had plenty of room for improvement after a disappointing first half of the season. We have now managed to make them look more like a team and they are more together as a unit which is pleasing.”
Next week the 20s are away to Celtic on Monday before playing Falkirk at home on the Thursday. The remaining games see the young Dons play league leaders Ross County at home, Partick Thistle away, Hearts at home before finishing the season away to Dundee on the 2nd of May.
