Jonny Hayes | six of the best
To celebrate the news that Jonny Hayes has extended his contract with The Dons until the summer of 2019 we have taken the opportunity to take a look back at some of his best moments as an Aberdeen player:
Motherwell 0-2 Aberdeen, SLC Quarter Final, 30th October 2013
With his side down to ten men and as the match entered the closing stages Hayes used his pace to great effect in the perfect counter-attacking goal. With Motherwell stretched Jonny burst into the box and fired the ball high into the net sparking scenes of wild celebration in the away end at Fir Park.
Aberdeen 4-0 St Johnstone, SLC Semi Final, 1st February 2014
With a place in the League Cup Final at stake Aberdeen travelled to Edinburgh to take on St Johnstone at Tynecastle. On the day Jonny was as influential as ever getting as he opened the scoring before doubling his tally with the fourth goal to complete the rout and send The Dons on the way to the final.
Aberdeen 2-1 Celtic, Scottish Premiership, 25th February 2014
Celtic’s visit to Pittodrie on this particular occasion can only be associated with one thing, Jonny’s wonder strike from 30 yards which moved from right to left before flying past Fraser Forster into the top corner of the net. The strike helped deliver Celtic’s first league defeat of the season and brought to an end the keeper’s run of 1,256 minutes without conceding a league goal. What a strike, what a night.
Aberdeen 2-1 Celtic, Ladbrokes Premiership, 3rd February 2016
Almost two years on from his wonder strike that beat Forster, Jonny was at it again as he opened the scoring in the first half at Pittodrie. The goal, in front of a sell-out crowd, sent The Dons on their way to close the gap at the top of the table to three points. Unsurprisingly the goal was selected as AFC’s Goal of the Season for 2015/16.
Aberdeen 2-1 Rangers, Ladbrokes Premiership, 25th September 2016
This match will be remembered for James Maddison’s breath-taking stoppage time free-kick (which was won after a foul by Tavernier on Hayes) but it was Jonny Hayes who put The Dons in front after a closely fought opening 45 minutes.
Hearts 0-1 Aberdeen, Ladbrokes Premiership, 30th December 2016
Over the past two seasons matches with Hearts have been very keenly contested, with the sides often being separated by the smallest of margins. On this occasion it was Hayes who stepped up to find the back of the net and ensure that a commanding performance from The Dons brought the three points it deserved.
