Adam Rooney "we were professional with our work"
Adam Rooney scored his 69th and 70th goals for the club this afternoon in the 4-0 win over Stranraer. After the game he spoke to Andrew for RedTV:
“Coming back from the break straight into a cup game, we knew it was going to be a difficult match but we put in a good week’s training out there in Dubai and last week we worked hard back in Aberdeen. We finished 2016 on a high and we wanted to continue that on.
“Once the got the first two goals it was pretty easy after that.
“Credit to Stranraer, they played well early on and Joe was forced to make a good save. They also put one or two balls in the box so they caused us a few problems but once we got the first goal then we took control of the game and it could have been a few more.
“We're confident right now, we had a good end to 2016 with three straight wins and a lot of the lads scoring goals. It's nice personally to get a couple on the first game back, two great finishes from Niall today as well. He's been on fire lately.
“For the first goal Jonny has done very well. He rose like a salmon! He must having been working on that over the winter break! To be fair he does have a good spring. It was a good ball floated to the back post by Niall and I just gambled that Jonny was going to win the header.
“For the penalty incident I did not even see the hand ball but the lads said it was a definite penalty. I was pleased to be able to get another goal from the resulting spot kick. And as I mentioned Niall scored two good goals as well. We could have had a few more. Including myself!
“The goalkeeper has made a number of excellent saves. He made an excellent from me in the first half. We were guilty of missing a few chances as well, including me who missed a sitter.
“It's probably one of the worst I've had since I've been here. I've probably had worse in the past but as a striker you have to be prepared to miss chances. You don't dwell on them too much if you get the win.
“I am just delighted to get through. That is the main thing. There are no easy cup ties. They only appear easy when you look back at them. We made it look simple by playing well. For that to happen you have to be prepared. You have to be professional. We done that today. We were very professional with our work.
“Once we got the first couple of goals I think we controlled the game and we done a professional job.
“It would be nice to get a home draw in the next round. The fans do enough travelling as it is.
“The winter break was new for me, but I really enjoyed it. Most of the lads got to spend some time with their families and then we obviously went off to Dubai for the training camp which was very beneficial.
“I think the lads feel refreshed as you could see in bits of our play today, probably lacking a little bit of match sharpness due to the break but good to have a professional performance to get through.
“That's four straight wins, we're looking to kick on from that now. We'll take each game as it comes and we know it's going to be a tough one next week. We're obviously confident as it is so hopefully we can put in another good performance and get the win.”
