Red Army set for AFCCT Challenge Match

01 September 2016

This Saturday a team of Aberdeen FC Former Players, led by Russell Anderson, will take on a team of AFC supporters in the inaugural AFCCT Challenge Match at Harlaw Park in Inverurie. The match will kick-off at 2pm with cash turnstiles will be available on the day.

Tickets for the match are also available to purchase from the Pittodrie Ticket Office, Bar Loco's at Harlaw Park and Edwards Bar both in Inverurie. Tickets are priced at £7 for adults and £3 for under 16s.

The match will raise funds for those who were affected by the flooding throughout Inverurie and Ballater earlier this year as well as Aberdeen FC's partner charity AFCCT.

Last week we revealed the AFC FPs squad that Russell has assembled:

Steven Tosh, Russell Anderson, Barry Robson, Paul Sheerin, Robert Connor, Mark Perry, Chris Clark, Darren Mackie, Jamie Buchan, Scott Thomson, Eugene Dadi, Dougie Bell, Andy Roddie, John Gardiner, Stephen Beckett, Malcolm Kpedekpo, Colin Milne, Robbie Hedderman, Drew Jarvie.

Russell told RedTV:

“The idea of the game goes back to a conversation I had with one of my ex-team mates, Steve Tosh. He suggested it was something we should consider doing as the AFC FPs had never really played a game before. It is something a number of clubs such as Hearts do on a regular basis and they seem to be pretty successful.

“In terms of the game next Saturday, we thought we would put the match on as well as trying to raise some money for some local good causes. There are three charities that will benefit – The AFC Community Trust will be one of them because they are doing a lot of work behind the scenes to help arrange the game. They have been working closely with the Former Players Association and I am hoping that it is an arrangement that will continue to develop over time. We are trying to engage with the supporters and give them some kind of access to the Former Players.”

Earlier this week The Red Army squad were invited down to Pittodrie to collect their strips ahead of Saturday's match. All of the players received a tour of the stadium, and got the chance to meet two of the players they will be up against on Saturday, Russell Anderson and Steve Tosh.

Local firm Apex Tubulars have shown their support for the event as sponsors of the Former Players team. The former Dons will line-up in a custom made white strip with the AFC Supporters set to Don the famous red shirt for the fixture.

The Red Army side will be managed on the day by Dons legend Joe Harper who was also on hand to meet the players at his disposal with former boss and current AFC Director Craig Brown set to manage the Former Players side this Saturday.

The Red Army team is as follows:

Jon Barbour, Bryan Sinclair, Craig Sandison, Alan Fraser, Mike Ogston, Bruce Urquhart, Robbie Watts, Rob Alexander, Gary Taylor, Jamie Thomson, Jack Donaldson, Chris Morrison, Reece Mair, Neil MacDonald, Paul Clarkson, Glen Schreuder, Stuart Masson, Stuart Drysdale, Neil Robertson-Murray, Bryan Robertson, Darren Calder and Adam Cornick.
