Dons loan watch

18 July 2016

Last weekend marked the commencement of the new format of the Betfred Cup which saw three Aberdeen players make their debuts for their new clubs after being sent out on loan from Pittodrie:

Robbie Mutch

Robbie recently penned a year-long loan deal at Gayfield Park to link up with Dick Campbell’s Arbroath side in order to gain invaluable league experience and convince the Aberdeen management team that he has the potential to one day become a future Dons’ number 1.

It would be fair to say that Robbie produced one of the finest goalkeeping performances throughout the first round of fixtures as his side held Dundee United to a 1-1 draw courtesy of a late Colin Hamilton equaliser. Robbie produced some great saves throughout and demonstrated a real maturity despite being only 17 years-old, which led to him being named man of the match. It was a promising start from the young lad from Inverurie and hopefully he will continue his progression at Arbroath over the course of the season.

Cammy Smith

Cammy has already played for Aberdeen on 89 occasions, including over an hour in Aberdeen’s successful League Cup final in 2013, however with Derek McInnes now well-equipped in the forward areas and Cammy at an age where it is imperative that he plays first team football both parties were attracted to Cammy making the move to Tannadice for the 2016-17 season.

Cammy made his first appearance for the Arabs on Friday evening when he replaced Blair Spittal in the 68th minute of their opening Betfred Cup fixture against Arbroath. Cammy would have a significant impact on the game as it was his deflected shot that landed at the feet of Henri Anier who tucked home the opening goal of the game. Cammy will be looking to make his first start for the Tangerines tomorrow evening when they face Cowdenbeath at home.

Danny Rogers

Already a fans’ favourite at the Falkirk Stadium, Danny resigned for Peter Houston’s side in early July after an extremely impressive season last time out for the Bairns. Aberdeen’s recruitment of goalkeepers Joe Lewis and Neil Alexander freed Danny to return to Falkirk to pick up from where he left off at the end of last season as he was named as the Championship Goalkeeper of the Year.

In technically his second debut, Danny was on the wrong-side of a 1-0 score line when Falkirk visited the Forthbank Stadium to take on Stirling Albion. It was an unfortunate result, however we are sure Falkirk and Danny will bounce-back as they look to go one better than their play-off defeat last season.

Aaron Lennox

Aaron Lennox was on the bench and watched his Raith Rovers side beat Highland League champions, Cove Rangers, 2-1 in the opening group match of the Betfred League Cup at Forfar.

The Australian under-23 international, has joined Gary Locke’s side for the season. The Dons have high hopes for the 23 year-old who made his first team debut on the final day of last season against Ross County.
