Cammy Smith joins Dundee Utd on loan

13 July 2016

Aberdeen striker Cammy Smith this afternoon joined Dundee United on a season long loan. Cammy will meet up with his new team mates at Tannadice immediately.

The 20-year-old, who came through the Dons youth system, made his first team debut on 21 April 2012, coming on as a 54th minute substitute against Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

He went on to score his first senior goal with a header in a 1-1 draw at Inverness CT on 15th September 2012. He picked up the Aberdeen Young Player of the Year award two seasons ago and has represented Scotland at U16, U17 and U19 level. Cammy played against ICT in the League Cup final victory in 2014 and was instrumental in helping the U20s win the Development League the following year.

Over the past six seasons Cammy has made 91 appearances for the Dons and scored 4 goals.

Cammy should be available to play in Dundee United’s first competitive game of the season in the televised League Cup group stage tie against Arbroath on Friday night at Gayfield. If both are selected, it could mean Cammy playing against fellow Dons loanee Robbie Mutch.

After completing the move Cammy told www.afc.co.uk

“I feel this is the right move for me this season. At this stage of my development I need to try and play more first team football, so I am really looking forward to the challenge of trying to play on a regular basis for Dundee United.

“I think the Championship this season is going to be a good league and it is going to be very competitive.

“I know a number of the younger players at Tannadice as I have been with them in the Scotland youth setup so I am sure they will help me settle in quickly.

“I am still an Aberdeen player and, first and foremost an Aberdeen fan – I will try and get along to watch the games when I can. I will be working hard to help Dundee United have success this season and hopefully if I do well I can become more a regular for Aberdeen in the years to come.”

Manager Derek McInnes added, “This is a good move for Cammy and an opportunity for him to play regular first time football. The objective is for him to gain valuable experience and come back here pushing for a regular first team spot while, although it’s a season long loan, we have the option to recall him in January.”

Everyone at Pittodrie wishes Cammy the very best of luck at United.
