Goals of the Season 2015/16

14 June 2016

With the 2016/17 season SPFL fixtures released on Friday and the campaign fast approaching we take a look back at the Don’s best goals of the 2015/16 season:

Peter Pawlett 2-0 HNK Rijeka

Aberdeen’s arguably most impressive result of the season came in the form of a 3-0 away win against the Croatian outfit HNK Rijeka, who would not lose another home game all season.

Peter had earlier been denied a headed effort by the linesman’s flag, however he was not to be denied and went on to send the travelling Aberdeen support into raptures by exceptionally converting Shay Logan’s cross with a diving header to put the Dons 2-0 up on the night.

Adam Rooney 1-0 Dundee

Adam had another great season for the Dons in which he managed to tally a total of 20 league goals, 4 of them coming against Paul Hartley’s side in only 3 games. The first of which was without a doubt Aberdeen’s  best ‘team goal’ of the campaign with every outfield player touching the ball followed by an excellent run and cross from Jonny Hayes and culminating in an excellent headed finish by Rooney pased Scott Bain.

Adam went on to slot home a penalty to ensure the match ended in a home win for McInnes’ men.

Niall McGinn 2-0 Heart of Midlothian

The record breaking start to the season continued at Tynecastle when Aberdeen made it 8 wins out of 8 after storming to a 3-1 victory over their Edinburgh rivals courtesy of a David Goodwillie double and a special Niall McGinn solo effort. The Northern Irishman’s goal was one which his fellow countryman George Best would have been proud of as he nut-megged Pallardo, glided past Paterson and curled one into Alexander’s top left hand corner.

Shay Logan 4-0 Kilmarnock

The most convincing win of the season came at Rugby Park in mid-December with Aberdeen hitting the hosts for four. Excellent goals from Niall McGinn, Adam Rooney and Jonny Hayes had put Aberdeen three up before Shay Logan rounded off an excellent all-round move. Cammy Smith’s fantastic through ball put Peter Pawlett in the clear only for him to audaciously back-heel to the incoming Logan who neatly placed the ball past the helpless Jamie MacDonald to make it 4-0.

Jonny Hayes 1-0 Celtic

Jonny was rewarded for his excellent performances last season by being named the Players’ Player of the Year, Manager’s Player of the Year and also taking home the Goal of the Season award.

His wonder-strike against Celtic, which helped the Dons to a 2-1 victory was without a doubt the outstanding effort of the season, hitting Craig Gordon’s net after swerving from right to left off the outside of Jonny’s left boot from the best part of 25 yards. It wasn’t Jonny’s first spectacular effort against the boys in Green, reminiscent to his strike against them two years previously, hopefully Jonny can make it number 3 next year!

Adam Rooney 4-1 St. Johnstone

Adam is not known for many solo goals, however his effort at McDiarmid Park, which Aberdeen went on to win 4-3, is certainly more than worth mentioning. Picking the ball up 20 yards into his own half, the Irishman ghosted passed two Saint’s defenders, shrugged off another and fired a left-footed effort across the keeper into the bottom corner.

Kenny McLean 3-0 Hamilton Academical

McLean produced an excellent first full season at Aberdeen, contributing some vital goals along the way. Aberdeen had already put Hamilton to the sword in the match after Simon Church headed in to make it 1-0 and Niall McGinn capitalised on a defensive error to double the lead.

However the best goal of the game was yet to come as Jonny Hayes sent Graeme Shinnie down the left-wing with a delightful flick over the Hamilton defender’s head. Shinnie kept his composure by providing a pin-point cut back to McLean who took the chance on first time and whipped a lovely left-footed effort into the top right hand corner.
