Aaron Lennox on RedTV

18 April 2016

Aberdeen goalkeeper Aaron Lennox spoke to RedTV recently. The Australian keeper has been in impressive from for the Development Side since joining the Dons at the end of January.

“I am originally from Sydney. I grew up in the Sydney area and just fell into football. When I was playing at U8 or U9s level one of the goalkeepers got injured so I put my hands up for going in goal. I have been there ever since! I must have done alright. I was just playing football to keep fit at a young age but then I started to get seen by people and I ended up coming to the UK on a tour with Sydney United. Whilst on the tour I went and trained with different clubs. I was actually at Charlton and was seen by a guy called Lee Smelts. He then recommended me to a goalkeeping coach at Spurs called Perry Suckling. I then went on a trial at Tottenham when I was 14. I spent an afternoon at training with the first team which involved Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov taking part in a shooting drill into me! That was an experience.

“Word then spread about Australia and I got selected for the U17 national team when I was still only 15. One thing led to another and I came back to the UK for a few trails. After my debut for the Australian 17s though I was then selected for the Australian Institute of Sport on a full scholarship. I was there for two years playing in the national youth league in Australia. After that I came to the UK again and joined QPR.

“That is the short version! There was a lot more that happened in-between!

“I used to play just about every other sport when I was young. I came from a very sporting family. My brother Michael played baseball and turned professional when he turned 16. He joined the Boston Red Sox and played for their AA team in Florida. Another close relation played college basketball in the US in North Carolina and my dad played Rugby League. So I had a very sporting upbringing.”
