AFC Greatest Ever XI: Goalkeeper & Defenders

24 November 2015

On Saturday 28th November we are calling on all Dons fans to help us celebrate all things AFC as we hold our first ever official Retro Day at Pittodrie.

To mark the occasion all adult tickets have been reduced to the symbolic price of £19.03 as we welcome Ross County to Pittodrie.

Tickets for the match can be purchased online at afc.co.uk/tickets

To celebrate our Retro Day theme we asked The Red Army to vote for their greatest ever Aberdeen team and over 1000 fans took part by naming their ultimate Dons XI and manager.

Yesterday we revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson was unanimously voted as the man to take charge of the greatest ever Dons team. The first two players to be unveiled in the greatest team were Gothenburg great, Neil Simpson and former League Cup winning captain Russell Anderson.

Today we can reveal that the man who has been tasked with keeping the ball out of the net for the greatest ever Dons team is Jim Leighton. Over 60% of your greatest team selections featured the Gothenburg Great who appeared for the Dons between the sticks over four different decades.

The greatest ever team would not be complete without a place for the most iconic Aberdeen player of all time, Willie Miller. The stopper, who dedicated his entire playing career to The Dons, will be joined in the side by a man who he formed such a formidable defensive partnership with during the 1980s, Alex McLeish. McLeish,
like Miller, won every domestic honour during his time at Pittodrie and was an integral part of the side which conquered Europe in 1983. With a combined total of well over 1000 appearances for The Dons, the duo unsurprisingly proved to be very popular choices amongst the Red Army featuring in over 80% of your team selections.

The final place in the backline has been handed to a man who made the right back spot his own during his time at Pittodrie, Stuart Kennedy. The full back appeared over 300 times between 1976 and 1983 for The Dons and would have undoubtedly gone on to make many more appearances if his career had not been ended prematurely by injury.

Tomorrow we will reveal the players that have been selected to join Neil Simpson in midfield as well as the two strikers who you have selected as the greatest ever to play for The Dons.

The greatest ever Aberdeen team, as selected by The Red Army, will feature on a piece of artwork to be displayed within the RDS Concourse. Members of the greatest ever team will be on hand on match-day as we carry out the official unveiling.
