The Manager Post Match

25 April 2015

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes believes his side showed a clear will to win as they scored two goals in six second-half minutes against Inverness. After Edward Ofere's goal three minutes into the second half, a David Raven own-goal and a close-range finish from Niall McGinn ensured all three points would be heading back to Aberdeen.

McInnes was pleased with the determination the Dons showed to overcome the one-goal deficit and pick up the three points.

The win secures Aberdeen's best finish in the top flight for 21 years, with them now 19 points clear of the Caley Jags in second place.

After the game he told the media:

“The will to win was clear.

“The conditions played a huge part in the game as the wind really got up. In the first half we had to defend deeper and we could not really get out our own half. Inverness were excellent. You could see exactly why they are in a cup final and why they are third in the league.

“We have our goalkeeper to thank as Scott kept us in the game with two or three top quality saves and it was perhaps harsh on Inverness, and fortunate for us that we went in at the interval at 0-0. He kept us in it.

“We had the wind behind us in the second half and we anticipated that they would sit deep and might struggle to get out so we brought Cammy Smith on because he is great with his back to play. 20 or 30 yards from goal he is very good at causing problems.  We got the ball into him and he showed great tenacity to win the free-kick for the first goal.

“Cammy played a very important part in the game going our way.

“Even though we went behind the players deserve a lot of credit for the way they fought back. I always thought there were goals in us today.

“What was pleasing was at 1-1 the reaction from the players. For me there was only us that would go on to win the game. We put pressure on them. From our experiences this season I could sense that we would go on and score, and so could the players. The crowd behind the goal got behind them and the goal was always to come.

“I am not saying that we deserved to win the match because Inverness had so much of the game but we have found a way to win and in the end it is a really satisfying three points.

“Consistency is made up of so many factors. There is the focus, there is the drive, there is concentration and also ability and determination. I think the determination we have shown in poor conditions has got the job done today.

“Finishing second is a significant moment. Aberdeen teams have found that hard to achieve. The club has had some bad years and some seasons they have not even been in the top six so to do it the players should be proud of their efforts and we should feel good about our club.

“There is still work to be done and 12 points to be earned.”
