Cammy Smith on REDTV

12 March 2015

Cammy Smith spoke to REDTV before training today. He started by telling us about his brilliant goal the other night for the U20s:

“To start off with it was a great time to get a goal, 10 seconds into the half and it probably killed the game. I just kind of got my body in front of the Dundee player beside me and took my touch. It sat up nicely and I tried to hit it as well as I could. I managed to get a lot of dip on it. There was a lot of movement. I hit it with the laces and it was one of those ones that you knew was going to hit the back of the net. Everything has to go right for a goal like that. It was a nice goal, probably up there with one of the best I have scored.

“That is me into double figures at U20 level and hopefully I can keep getting the goals. The Development league is about developing players when you are young but at any age level you want to win. It would be nice to win something but we will just see how things pan out for the rest of the U20 season.

“Sometimes strikers say they have a good understanding when they don’t, but me and Lawrence (Shankland) really do. I really enjoying playing upfront with him. I know what he is doing to do and he knows what I am going to do. It has helped that we have played regularly together. Hopefully we can keep our good form going during the last eight games. (of the Development League season)

“In the box Lawrence is so prolific. He finishes nine out of ten chances. He is also very good at holding up the play. The U20s like to play football and Lawrence is a target man. I can bounce things off him and link play with him. It is not Lawrence and I who have done well. Kieran Gibbons in the midfield has done brilliant for us. Jamie Masson has been in great form since he came back from his loan spell. Scott Wright has had a good season. There is a lot of us. We have a very strong squad and there are five very good players out on loan.

“Competition for places is also very strong in the senior side. Andrew Driver has also come in and I think he will be a good addition.

“I think it is a good thing. It keeps everyone on their toes. It brings out the best in players. We know we are young (Lawrence and I). We feel our performances in training and the reserve games and when we have been called upon at first team level have been ok so we will just have to wait for the manager to pick us. It does help playing well in the Development League. If you don’t play well for the u20s you are not going to play well for the first team. The manager knows our games and our strengths and knows he has that option.

“It is exciting times. There are a couple of months left in the season and on both fronts there is a lot to play for.”
