Derek McInnes Post Match Quotes

27 September 2014

what the manager told the media after the game today against Inverness CT

“It was a good response to going behind, we lost a poor goal from a set play and we have to be better than that. It is a cheap goal, a goal for nothing in my eyes and we have got to be better.

“The response was excellent and we finished the first half strongly.

“We scored a good goal to get back in it through Adam, he is a real predator and he showed a real calmness to get round the keeper and stick it in the net. It was good pressure on the ball to turn over possession and we did that constantly throughout the game to force them into mistakes.

“The second goal was good play from Jonny Hayes and just when we thought the moment had passed us David Goodwillie had good sense to keep the ball alive and makes a good decision to slip it to Shay and it’s a top finish. Having our right back that high up the pitch in the box showed everybody our intent.

“After half-time we were looking for more of the same but we got caught in possession and they got the break of the ball off Shay Logan’s tackle and Watkins had a neat finish. So we had it all to do again and picked up the mantle again to get ourselves in front and I don’t think anybody could deny that we deserved to win the game.

“It was a hard fought game, it was end to end and it was open, we know that when we play with two strikers we might not have the same control of games but I thought that any possession Inverness had was all in front of us and they never really hurt us at any real time apart from for the second goal.

“We carried a real threat throughout the whole game and I am delighted for the player’s efforts that they get the reward of the 3 points.

“I think anytime that you put three wins together back to back you have got to be pleased. It is not easy, every game brings a challenge and we know that we have got to play well to win games.

“We are not good enough to just turn up and win games without bringing a performance.

“Today we needed a strong performance to beat Inverness, they have got good experience and they are a decent side. For me our competitive edge was really pleasing today, I know that we can play well and that we have players that can hurt teams who carry a threat but there was a real collective competiveness about us today to make sure we won the game and we thoroughly deserved the three points.

“We had two clean sheets prior to today and the clean sheets were a huge platform for us last season but I think everybody will agree today that it was a good game, I am happy for the game to be high scoring as long as we win it!

“In the final third we passed up a few more opportunities and the final pass might have helped to work the goalkeeper a bit more but we feel that there is goals in us and that is great for confidence.

“The opportunity is there for everybody to go in and play, when I pick a team I have the benefit of seeing the players train Monday-Friday.

“It’s down to form, how they train and the opposition so there will be times where we have to re-jig and play a certain way but today I felt that was the right team to play Inverness. It’s difficult to ignore the options that we have at the top end of the pitch.”
