Ryan Jack finished his Scotland U21 career this evening on a high as he captained the side in what was his final match at under-21 level, his 19th cap in total.

Jack earned his first under-21 cap – and goal- in a 3-0 friendly win over Norway back in August 2011. He was part of the squad which finished second in their qualifying group for the 2013 finals and cites the 2-1 win over the Netherlands in that campaign as his best memory of playing for the under-21s. Jack was also complimentary towards coach Billy Stark, who handed him his first call-up and made him skipper.

He told scottishfa.co.uk: “Billy has been absolutely brilliant for me.

“I’ve played at right back for the under-21s which is practically a new position for me as I normally play in central midfield for my club.

“The experience of playing international football at this level has really helped my development and I’m thankful to Billy for what he has done for me.”

Jack has already sampled life in the Scotland senior squad following his involvement in the squad for the FIFA World Cup qualifying win over Croatia last year. Several of his former under-21 team mates were part of the squad which faced Germany last night and Jack has ambitions of joining them in future.

He said: “Hopefully one day I can get another call-up to the squad and earn a cap.

“There are a few younger lads in the squad at the moment so it just shows that if you are playing well every week then the manager is not going to be afraid to pick you and you will get your chance.”

In the game this evening Ryan Gauld grabbed his first two Scotland Under-21 goals in Differdange as Scotland ended their 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Luxembourg. Lewis Macleod was also on target for the Scots who finished third in Group 3 behind group winners Slovakia and second-placed Netherlands. The scoreline mirrored the result Scotland picked up at St Mirren Park back in March last year in their opening group match.

Of the other Dons in the squad, Clark Robertson limped out of the 1-1 draw on Thursday against Slovakia and returned to Aberdeen whilst Declan McManus was an unused substitute.
