Europa League Matchday Centre: FK Daugava Riga 0 v 3 Aberdeen (AGG: 0-8)

10 July 2014

Aberdeen led FK Daugava Riga 3-0 at half time thanks to an Adam Rooney hatrick. The Dons got the opener on 21 minutes when Rooney flicked the ball home before doubling the lead on 40 minutes when he got the final touch on Shay Logan’s tempting cross. 4 minutes later he completed his hatrick when good play by the Dons set Jonny Hayes away and he ran into the box before crossing towards the back post where Rooney was waiting to sweep home to give the Dons an 8-0 lead on aggregate at half time.

The second period was a bit of a non event with neither side really getting out of second gear. The Dons were happy to keep possession of the ball and Daugava rarely threatened, although Jamie Langfield did make one outstanding save to deny the Latvians a solitary goal in the tie. A comfortable victory for The Dons who will now face FC Groningen of the Netherlands in the next round of qualifying.

The Dons are in Europa League action this evening as they take on FK Daugava Riga in the Latvian capital. After a convincing five-nil win at Pittodrie, Derek McInnes makes two changes to the side with Ashton Taylor & Andrew Considine taking the place of Russell Anderson and the injured Peter Pawlett.
