David Goodwillie & Derek Mcinnes

New signing & the manager on RedTV

The Dons’ latest recruit spoke exclusively to REDTV this afternoon:

“The manager really didn’t need to convince me to come to the club. I know the history of Aberdeen and how big a club it is so I jumped at the opportunity.

“Tony was my reserve coach at Dundee United when I was growing up and he was always good to me and helped me progress. Derek was the Captain at Dundee United when I was 16 and I always had a lot of respect for him. He was always good to the younger boys coming through the ranks.

“It’s a one year deal and then we’ll see how it goes. My target is to play as many games as I can and score as many goals as I can.

“I’ve learned a lot in my time down South. There were a lot of highs and lows.

“I’m looking to get as many games as I can, score goals and then we’ll see what happens at International level but I just need to work hard and good things will come.

“I know some of the boys, I’ve played with a couple of them and obviously played against a lot of them.

“Hopefully I am not too far behind in terms of fitness. I’ve got a wee bit of catching up to do but I will work as hard as I can to get to the same level as the rest of the boys.”

The manager spoke to the media today to discuss his latest acquisition:

“I’m very pleased to secure David. I think he is a striker of a real quality and capability. He is someone that when I played with and knew him when he was younger I always felt he was destined to have a top career. It wasn’t so long ago that he had that big money move and a lot was expected. Since then it hasn’t quite happened but we think now that we’re fortunate to be in a position to get him. He is fortunate that he is coming to a club like Aberdeen. He’s coming in to a team who are going the right way and full of good players. I think he is the type of player that will thrive playing with the players we have at the club.

“Getting a good striker is always the hardest one. When you are working within in parameters it dictates the level of player you can get and sometimes a striker is the hardest to get because of that.

“I think David brings goals, a level of ability that will help us score more goals. At home last season we fell short on that so we had to address that. I always felt playing against Dundee United I was concerned when he was playing against my team.

“I’ve always felt he can always score goals and I think our supporters have always taken to players who work hard and represent the shirt well. We are very demanding of our players and he’s coming in to a dressing room where he is going to have to work hard to get himself in our team and work hard to show the ability he has got. If he invests in us the way we are going to invest in him in terms of our staff and what we are going to put in to him we will give him every opportunity to be the player he wants to be.
The players will be buoyant. Already the reaction from the players is an indication of the type of impact we hope he can have.

“David won’t be available for the game on Thursday but should we get through to the next round he would be registered for that match.”
