FK Daugava Riga arrive in the Granite City

02 July 2014

The Dons’ Europa League Opponents FK Daugava Riga have this evening arrived in Aberdeen ahead of tomorrows, Europa League First Qualifying Round, first leg tie.

Manager, Arvydas Skrupskis spoke briefly to the media:

“We have just trained as normal and prepared as we would do for any game. For some of the players this is the first time they have played in Europe, however we have other players who have played in the Champions League qualifiers so for them the occasion will not be any problem.

“I believe the game tomorrow night will not be easy for Aberdeen and I really hope that after tomorrow night’s game there will still be an interest in the second leg and then we will see who goes to the second round.

“I expect as Aberdeen are playing at home that in the first 15-20 minutes they will press us looking for the opening goal. We have watched the last three friendly games so we know what Aberdeen’s strongest side is, what their strengths are and also where they have potential weaknesses that we can exploit.

The Lithuanian manager, who was part of the Kaunas set-up when they knocked Rangers out of Europe in 2008, knows that surprises at this stage of European competition do happen.

“I remember that everyone expected Rangers to go through so there was no pressure on us. We were able to play with a freedom.

“You always have to go into a game believing you can win. If you come with the attitude that you will lose, then it is unlikely you will get a result. If we did not believe we could beat Aberdeen there would be no point in coming here.”
