Europa League Countdown |
holders upset in Hungary
Arguably the Dons finest ever come back in Europe came on Wednesday 21st March 1984.
Mark McGhee was the Aberdeen hero as the Dons held on to hopes of retaining the ECWC with an extra time win over Hungarian side Ujpest Dozsa in a dramatic quarter final second leg at Pittodrie.
Trailing 2-0 from the first game in Budapest, McGhee scored all three Aberdeen goals, his second coming five minutes from time to take the tie into extra time.
Whilst the second leg produced one of the Dons best European performances, the first leg in Hungary produced one of the most bizarre!
Despite being in control for much of the 90 minutes, some poor defending and some astonishing misses led to a two goal deficit.
On RedTV now we have footage from both the home and away ties against Ujpest.

?jpest could have be in line for playing the Dons this season as they also qualified for the Europa League. They were winners of the 2013-14 Hungarian Cup, ?jpest winning their 9th Hungarian Cup on 25 May 2014 against DVTK in Budapest. The game was decided by a tense penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. The cup win came after twelve trophy less years.
This meant they should have qualified for the Europa League second qualifying round, but failed to obtain a UEFA license. As a result, Gy?r, the runners-up of the 2013-14 Hungarian League, entered the second qualifying round instead of the first qualifying round, and the first qualifying round berth was given to Di?sgy?r, the cup runners-up.
