A young Aberdeen side put on an outstanding performance this evening as they defeated Falkirk by five goals to nil in the League Cup 4th round.
They were superb in the opening period at the Falkirk Stadium and led by two goals to nil at half time. Joe Shaughnessy opened the scoring when he lashed home the opening goal on the 23rd minute after a long Clark Robertson throw before Cammy Smith rounded off a terrific move with a fine finish on 35 minutes. Calvin Zola was booked early on for a challenge on Bairns keeper McGovern and after a few subsequent fouls, he was replaced by Scott Vernon.
After the break the Dons wrapped the game up in style and it was Vernon who stole the show with a hatrick. Firstly he slid the ball beyond McGovern on 53 minutes and a minute later he pounced on a McGovern save to slam the ball home from 10 yards. He completed his hatrick on 74 minutes with a superb penalty after Pawlett had been brought down in the box.
They could have added further goals after that but had to settle for a 5-0 victory and a place in tomorrows quarter final draw at Hampden.
