Derek McInnes formally introduced his new signing Calvin Zola at a press conference this afternoon.

“He’s a player we had identified a few weeks back and after speaking to Calvin I felt there was a real enthusiasm from him. I think as a manager when you meet any player you’re interested in signing you’ve always got to feel that enthusiasm and I think as a player he will compliment the forward players we have at the club. You can see physically he gives us a good presence. We’re getting him at a good age, at 28 I think he is on the back of a couple of good seasons in the English leagues and we feel, having spoken to Calvin, he will relish the opportunity to come and be an important player for us going forward so delighted to get him board. I’m grateful to the Board for their support in getting Calvin in and I’ve no doubt he’ll do well here.

“I knew about Calvin having worked down south. I think he’s always been a player about League One and Two, offered a lot of potential and we just feel in the last couple of seasons, in particular this season, he has added a level of goals to his all round game. We managed to watch him at close hand towards the end of last season and he was very influential in helping Burton have a good campaign this year and his goal return was good. It’s not just his goals but I think he will help bring a different element to our team as well. He’s got good mobility, he can upset defenders and we felt that he can get in to good goal scoring positions and if we can get good service in to him I am sure he will thrive with the players we’ve got here.

“I think the attraction for Calvin, I know he had some interest from elsewhere, is the freshness. I think the stimulus coming to the SPL is something different and he will thrive on it. I know the SPL gets a bad press of late but it’s still a decent profile and I think he’s the type of player who has the personality and ability to relish the challenge and make a name for himself.”
