“It was a very good win.

“The aim at the start of the night was to take back second place. I felt we done that convincingly.

“We knew it was going to be tough. It is a tough place to come. We have come here earlier in the season and struggled. We knew what Motherwell would bring. We have watched them quite a bit recently. They make things difficult for teams and going forward they are a real threat.

“We defended brilliantly all night.

“I think we dealt with and nullified their threat very well. That gave us a platform to go and play. The defenders gave us confidence because they were solid.

“Our performance was excellent.

“We controlled most of the first half and created some chances but did not take any of them.

“The way they came out at the start of the second half was what we expected them to do at the start. So we knew at half time they would come out and have a real go. I think they were on top for a 10 minute spell but then we got the goal which was crucial. To get the goal when they were on top was a real blow for them. We did well to capitalise on a set-piece. I think the second goal secured the points because it put us in a commanding position and I felt we managed the game really well after that.

“Greg (Stewart) has a big part to play in the first goal. When I am in possession I always look up and have a look for Greg because he is always available. When he has his back to goal he is excellent. When I found him, I made the run round Greg and I knew he would give me it back and I was fortunate enough to see my shot hit the back of the net. It was a decent enough effort which skidded off the surface.

“Everyone to a man was excellent.

“As I said going forward Motherwell have caused teams problems, so it shows how well we defended and then going forward ourselves we were very good and played some nice football at times.

“Stevie May has done very well the last couple of games. Stevie is a nightmare for a defender. He was unlucky not to get a goal – he deserved one with his performance. His work and constant running frees up space for other players like myself. He is always willing to run in behind which allows the likes of myself to pick up balls.

“There are places to play for and there are some massive games coming up.

“The semi-final will be a completely different game. A different challenge. Motherwell know they can play better. I suppose it gives us confidence knowing how well we can play. if we play as well as that tonight them we have a chance of beating anyone.

“I will be watching the semi-final through my hands I think! I have confidence in the boys though. We have so much quality that can come into the side. I have so much confidence in the boys that will come in.

“It will more be about me trying to get my position back after that.

“Everyone is pulling in the same direction and everyone wants a trophy at the end of the season.

“But we have another important league game to come first and we will focus on that.

“We had the game in hand but we had to make it count and we have done that tonight. We are in a good position but there is a long way to go. We have six very tough games starting with Hearts on Saturday. There are a number of teams who want that second spot. We are exactly the same.

“We know what it is going to take to get second spot from the experience we have had over the past four or five seasons. This will certainly be the most challenging.”
