“It’s been a tough month or so to get some results.

“We knew tonight’s game was going to be a really really tough game with the way Kilmarnock have been playing, they hadn’t lost in eight matches.

“But I felt through the whole game – including extra time – we weren’t going to lose. Even when we went one down I still believed we would get a result.

“It did spur us on a bit when we went behind, the urgency was higher.

“We got the penalty and Kenny did really well to put it away. I felt at that stage we were going to nick it, hopefully before penalties, but it was not to be.

“I take my hat off to Freddie, he was outstanding in the penalty shootout. And all the boys who stepped up were fantastic.

“It’s the one real thing that goalies take pride in when it comes to Cup competitions and penalties. They want to make a couple of saves and Freddie was absolutely brilliant!

“I think Stevie was on the fifth penalty if it came down to that! It would have been up to the rest of us after that to chip in. But we practice these things in training so there’s a lot of confidence in the team to step up.

“I felt we deserved it. There’s been a lot of decent enough performances as of late and we just haven’t got over the line but tonight there was so many good performances out there. We knew it would be a tough game and we have had to grind it out and we did that.”
