Tony Docherty

Assistant Manager/Player Liaison Officer

Tony Docherty’s playing career began in 1987 with Dunfermline Athletic before moving to English side Cambridge United. In the early 1990s, Docherty returned to Scotland, having spells with Stirling Albion, East Stirlingshire and Albion Rovers.

Tony, a former SFA Development Officer, was assistant manager at Falkirk, before moving to Dundee United as part of the management team, before teaming up with Derek McInnes at St. Johnstone in 2007. He is recognised as one of the best coaches in the game and someone with undoubted man-management skills on the training ground to match his technical abilities.

Tony followed McInnes to Bristol City and the two were highly regarded down South. Unfortunately for them their spell didn’t last long, despite some early success.

The two were back in Scotland in 2013 when the Aberdeen job came available. The first season at Pittodrie was fruitful. The duo delivered the Club’s first trophy in 19 years after a penalty shoot-out victory over Inverness CT in the League Cup Final. 43,000 Dons fans travelled to Celtic Park that day and the players and staff delivered the silverware they craved.

Since Derek and Tony have been in charge at Pittodrie they have brought European football every season. It is a testament to their knowledge and skill as a team that has helped this club once again challenge for every honour in the Scottish game.
