Kingsford update: Further consultation is to be held for the Kingsford Stadium proposals after additional information has been submitted by Aberdeen FC.

The consultation will involve re-notification of neighbours, re-advertising the application and consulting the relevant external bodies and council services. It should be emphasised the consultation pertains to the additional information received.

Due to the further consultation, it will be necessary to hold a further pre-determination hearing, the purpose of which will be to focus on the additional information submitted by Aberdeen FC. The date for this hearing is 17 January 2018.

In response to the updated situation, Raymond Edgar, project director for Kingsford, said: “While we had been hoping for a decision on our application before Christmas, we now have an agreed timetable with the Council which will allow the proposals to be fully considered by Councillors in January.

“Following the deferral in October, we have worked with the Council planning officers to provide further reassurance that the Club’s approach to selecting Kingsford complies with legal requirements. In addition, we have undeniably demonstrated there are no other suitable, available and sequentially preferable sites within the city which could accommodate the development. In particular, we believe we have, once and for all, demonstrated that the proposals cannot be delivered at either King’s Links or Loirston.

“As requested by the Council’s economic development team, we have also provided further analysis which shows that the economic benefits of the development to the region are even greater than previously estimated.

“The Club recognises that the delay has been frustrating for all those who continue to back our plans, but it’s vital that we have the best chance of securing the right decision for the Club, the City, the region, our fans and the thousands of individuals from all communities who benefit from the activities of the Trust.”

“The additional information, contained in a supporting statement and appendices, will now be the subject of consultation. Councillors will be given an opportunity to ask questions on the additional information at a second pre-determination hearing in January, so that they will have all the information which they require to enable the application to be determined before the end of January.“

About the plans: The planning application to Aberdeen City Council for the 24.5 hectare site at Kingsford includes community and sports facilities; a football academy comprising outdoor pitches, pavilion and ancillary buildings; and a 20,000-seat capacity stadium along with associated access roads, parking, landscaping and engineering works.

Subject to planning approval, the proposals will see more than £40 million invested to create a new home for the Dons; provide a base for the significant expansion of the award-winning work of Aberdeen FC Community Trust on social inclusion, participation in sport and healthy lifestyles for all ages across the region; and create a focal point for footballing excellence in the north of Scotland.

The project would be delivered in two phases, with the community and sports facilities and football academy constructed first and the stadium in the second phase.

The restrictions of the Club’s no longer fit for purpose Pittodrie Stadium site, including the inability to develop co-located and dedicated training facilities, are an increasing barrier to its sustainable future

 HOW TO SUPPORT THE PLANS

A decision will be made on this planning application at a special meeting of the full Council on 30 January 2018. AFC had hoped a decision would be made before Christmas but the new date has been set to accommodate a further consultation period on the latest report submitted by the Club and another pre-determination hearing on 17 January 2018.

The latest report was produced in response to concerns from the Council planners in relation to the site selection process and co-location and the economic case.

We are, once again, seeking support to get this application over the line.

We’d be very grateful if you could write in support of the application, even if you have done so previously. However, your letters must relate only to the information in the supporting statement. You can therefore comment on your support for one or more of the below points:

 1) The site selection process (why Kingsford is the only viable and deliverable site)

 2) The need for co-location (why it’s important to have the community sports hub, football training academy and stadium all on one complex)

3) The economic case.

Your support can be lodged online on Aberdeen City Council’s website in the planning section.

Alternatively, you can email pi@aberdeencity.gov.uk or send a letter to address below before the 12th of December.
