Fresh from being crowned SWPL 2 Champions, the Club is pleased to reveal the winners of our Aberdeen FC Women Player of the Year awards for the 2020/21 season.

It has been another hugely successful season for the team, despite the challenges presented by COVID, and coach Emma Hunter has been impressed with the attitude of each and every player who drove the team on to promotion.

“You can give the awards to anyone in this team because they have been magnificent.

“Getting promotion was key but going out and getting the title in the style that we did was superb.

“It is a huge achievement for the Club and the players.”

And so, to the winners…

Young Player of the Year

Eva Thomson

The winner of this award has been selected by coach Emma Hunter and has been based on the contribution this young player has made to the team over the course of the season.

“Eva has been really consistent which for a young player is very critical.

“To have that consistency week in, week out is huge.

“She always gives 100% and has been fantastic all season.

“Players find it very difficult to play against her, she keeps it tight at her feet, she has got good control of the ball and scored one of the most important goals of the season with her last-minute winner against Dundee Utd on the opening day.”

Goal of the Season

Eva Thomson

(90+4 minute winner, SWPL2 Aberdeen 4 Dundee United 3 18/10/2020)

This award was once again voted for by Emma Hunter and follows much deliberation after a fantastic shortlist of contenders was drawn up.

“The importance and the occasion of the goal was huge, but you can’t discredit the technical ability of the goal.

“She takes a touch onto her left foot, and she doesn’t even draw her foot all the way back to score.

“I am really pleased for her.”

Players Player of the Year

Eilidh Shore

This award allows the players themselves to select a team-mate who they believe has made the biggest contribution to the team during the season. The award is voted for by all of the first team players via a private ballot.

Coach, Emma was not surprised to learn Eilidh had been recognised by her teammates:

“In every training session and in every game, you know what you are getting from her, she always gives 100%.

“Eilidh has a real maturity on the park so no matter what age or what level you play at, she earns respect around the dressing room.

“She has always been a fantastic player for us and hopefully she continues to grow with us.

“It is no surprise that her peers have voted for her as Player of the Year, she shows a real professionalism in whatever she does.”

Player of the Year

Francesca Ogilvie

The winner of our penultimate award has once again been selected by coach Emma Hunter and has been based on the outstanding contribution this player has made to the team over the course of the season.

Commenting on the winner Emma said: “As she come into the squad she has grown rapidly and in the later stages of the season that has been particularly evident.

“Francesca has dug us out a few times with her goal scoring as well as with her assists.

“She has a great delivery from wide areas. Off the pitch she has grown and matured and become a strong leader which has pushed us on to get the title.”

Congratulations to all our winners and to the wider team for their whole-hearted efforts this season!
