Aberdeen manager Stephen Glass this afternoon spoke to RedTV about his first appointment, Scott Brown coming to Pittodrie as player-coach.

“I know what Scott brings.

“I thought it was really important that we add to the coaching staff someone that was taking their first steps in coaching, someone who is young and vibrant and can also still help us on the pitch which is really big for us. He is a leader anyway and he will continue to do that.

“It is a natural progression for him to become a coach. He is part of our team and he is really looking forward to it. Scott is totally committed to it as well. It was not an easy decision for him to leave a place like Celtic, so it says a lot for the club and what we are going to be doing at Aberdeen.

“It is the possibility of what we have got here that has attracted him.

“He knows what I want to do with the team. He knows the staff that are here. He knows how ambitious the Chairman is. And it is something he wants to be a part of.

“It would have been very easy for him to stay at Celtic. There was a reason why they wanted him to stay around. He would have been a success, but we wanted that to happen at Aberdeen.

“He wants to be a part of it, and I was very keen for him to be part of it if it was possible so I am delighted to get it over the line.

“When it comes to a player-coaching role the training part is probably the easiest bit. He has been coaching as a player since he was 24, 25 because he is that type of player. And I know having that similar mentality myself as a player, although I was not as good or won as much! But it is something that is in you, to help drive people on and he has definitely got that.

“The learning part will be that he will be amongst all the decision-making processes that we go through as a group of staff. If there is any time he is not playing he will be around us. So basically, he is one of the assistants and that is how it will work.

“Getting in there before the end of next season will be very helpful for me because I can actually get a feel for the strengths and weaknesses of all the staff to make sure we are as well rounded as possible when we really hit the ground running next season. Before Scott gets in, I have a bit of work to do, but once he does arrive I will be able to position people appropriately.

“I knew Scott very well at Hibs. Our families were quite close. In more recent years we would speak now and then because in football you keep in touch with people you get on with. So you share ideas about coaching. It was difficult to meet up because any time I was back from the States he was obviously busy and I would be up north with the family.

“It is not about bringing in a mate. He is someone I have a relationship with, but I know it will be a success. That is the biggest part, he is not leaving Celtic because he knows he gets on with me.

“He thinks coming here will be a success.

“There’s a reason why most of the fans in Scotland don’t like him. It’s because he’s been a huge part in beating everybody else’s team other than the one’s he playing in. Off the pitch you don’t see all the charity work he does. You don’t see 90% of the things that Scott Brown does for people and he’s not looking for credit for it. That’s the type of person he is. He is from a great family, his wife and kids are great people and the Aberdeen community are going to love him.

“When deciding about who to appoint as part of my coaching team, the number one thing is, are they going to help the club?
“I thought he would be interested and I was really, really pleased to see how keen he was to get it done. So that’s exciting for me, knowing that someone like him wants to come along and be a part of it.

“It’s important that the coaching staff work well together and I know that Scott is a great people person as well and he can fit in anywhere. The staff at the club are going to love him and as I said the community are going to love him as well.”
