“This time last year we were saying the same thing, that we were pleased to get Tomas sorted out because he had done well.

“And it ends up that he has deserved another extension to his contract which is great for him.

“I am pleased it has all been done at such a difficult time. With the way things are at the moment, it gives him a bit of peace of mind.

“He is someone who really pushes Joe.

“The standards he sets at training, it does push Joe. He will show you up if you are not doing your work. The way he goes about his business is very professional. And that is why the younger ones can learn from him as he sets a great example.

“It is important that the chemistry is right between the two. You do not want a bad working environment which is then not healthy towards what you want to achieve when it comes to game time.

“And the chemistry is right.

“He knows Joe is the number one keeper, but it is important for him to play his part, even just in the dressing room. He has got to be someone who is liked and respected. The way he goes about his work, he gets that from all the players.

“Tomas and Joe have a close relationship. They both have experiences of playing in this league. And playing in bigger games. Tomas has played in different countries so they do have quite a lot in common when they get chatting.

“Something might happen in the game or over a period of time that Tomas can relate to because he has gone through similar situations or stages during his career.

“Sometimes also it is just a different voice.

“There is a really nice harmony amongst the group.

“The environment is open. You can discuss these things and you can then find solutions to things. The outcome is that Joe will play better and cut out any blips.

“They have been playing for a long time. They are both very experienced. It is not a matter necessarily of teaching them new tricks. It is more about keeping them confident and happy within their game. And keeping them on top of their game, whether it is on the training field or playing on a Saturday.”

There will be an extended interview with the AFC Head of Goalkeeping on RedTV this weekend.
