New Dons midfielder Funso Ojo spoke to RedTV on Sunday evening and talked of his happiness at being an Aberdeen player after days of speculation.

“I am really happy to be here.

“I have been here since early this morning but I have just got my training kit so it all feels real now!

“It is a big relief, a pressure off my shoulders. I have made my decision and now I am officially an Aberdeen player.

“The reason I chose Aberdeen was because of all the effort they put into it.

“At first I did my research online.

“I had spoken to certain people and I did not really want to come at first based on what people had told me. That is another lesson I have learned. I am 27 and I am still learning. You have to come up and see things for yourself and get your own impression.

“When I came up, I spoke to the gaffer, I spoke to Russ Richardson who played a big part, and then I saw the city. I saw how big the club was and I thought, this is the right step for me at this stage in my career.

“I visited the new training facility. That was impressive. I have been at some nice training grounds but I am looking forward to this one because everything will be new. All the technology is going to be state of the art.

“The manager played a massive part in my decision.

“He was willing to come and get me in the middle of the night! But I drove up myself and then he spent the full day with me. That made me feel welcome. We had some good talks about football, but not just football, we talked about other things outside football.

“He touched something in me.

“So he was a big influence.

“European football is a massive attraction. Hopefully the boys can get through on Thursday in Finland. I have played in Europe, that was at my first club but ever since then I have not been involved in any of the European competitions. The Europa League is a very good level and I want to play in those games. I will be pushing the lads to get some goals in!

“Hopefully we can even make the group stage.

“if I had to describe what type of player I am, I would say I am a footballer. I want to have the ball at my feet and I like to dictate the game. I want to be the link between the players and be the manager on the pitch. I will slow the game down if need be or speed it up.
“I am a player who makes other players better around me. So I won’t be the standout player that the supporters come to the stadium to see, but I will make sure the players that people do come to see, the flair players, that they will perform at a really high level because I will get the ball to them and make them do what they do.

“Coming through the PSV Youth Academy was a very good education for me. The Dutch are known for their passing football. We always had to pass the ball on the grass and do a lot of triangles. That is how I play to this day.

“I enjoyed my time in England.

“In my first season at Scunthorpe we were pushing for promotion. Unfortunately the second season we got relegated so that was not the happiest time. But overall I enjoyed the experience. Scunthorpe brought me to the UK and it was always my dream to play over here. I am thankful for that and I had two good years with them.

“From what I can see Scottish football is different. I am going to have to grow into it a bit. Hopefully I can do that as quickly as possible. I just want to go on the pitch and get my fitness levels up and be on the pitch with the players so I can start building up a connection.”
