Glasgow-based Aberdeen team is looking for new signings

28 June 2017

Red Stars Baagrade (Red Stars), Glasgow’s only Aberdeen Supporters football team, are looking to recruit new talent to its playing squad for the coming season.

Established in 2009, Red Stars are currently plying their trade in the Scottish Sunday Central Amateur Football League, playing against other amateur teams from across the Central Belt.

With pre-season kicking off on Monday 17 July Manager Greg Dixon is keen to add some experience to the team. “This will be Red Stars third season in the Sunday Central League, having previously played supporter’s leagues prior to this. Experience of playing 11-a-sides is desirable, but not essential, however the games are very competitive so it certainly is not the place for the faint hearted.

“Due to a number of departures from last season's squad, we are looking for players for all positions with goalkeeper and striker being a priority. The club also has a good social side to it which includes days out to watch the Dons at Pittodrie and other recreational activities such as going to the horseracing, footgolf, and greyhounds.”

Stuart Hay, Founder of Red Stars, added: “It's been fantastic to share a football team with so many like-minded Dons fans! We're all really proud to be able to represent Aberdeen down in Glasgow and look forward to some more Dandies joining us for the new season.”

Based in Glasgow's West End, the team trains Thursday evenings and plays its fixtures on Sunday afternoons. The teams’ ages range from 18 to 45 and is comprised of people who have moved down to Glasgow for university or to start a new job, or have always lived in the central belt.

Peter Shaw, Vice-Captain of the Red Stars, is one of those individuals who had to move down to Glasgow for his job. “Having moved from Aberdeen to Glasgow for work it was certainly a great way to quickly settle in – being able to train, play and socialize with fellow Aberdeen fans having not really known anybody in the city prior to moving. A few of my friends have also since got involved and have enjoyed being part of the team. I would recommend to anyone who is coming down to stay in the Glasgow area to reach out to us and get themselves involved.”
