Dean becomes the youngest Don

13 May 2017

Dons boss Derek McInnes praised teenage midfielder Dean Campbell after he became the youngest ever Don.

Hazlehead Academy pupil Dean came off the bench for the last few minutes, replacing Niall McGinn. Earlier in the day Dean had to sit an English Exam.

The Manager said: “Dean Campbell is one of the biggest Aberdeen fans at the club. His family are all massive fans. It meant a lot to them. We are stretched at the moment because of injuries so he might not have been given that opportunity but his position on the bench was merited after some of his performances.

“He was a school today. It is a good story and hopefully it will be the first of many for him. He is a boy we think a lot of. There are few others at that age who are coming through. He may well get more opportunities before the end of the season.”

Dean is aged 16 years, one month and 23 days, which sees him take over Jack Grimmer’s record as the youngest Dons debutant. To read about some of the other youngest Aberdeen player’s, please click here

On Wednesday Dean was named as the club’s Youth Academy player of the year in a ceremony at Pittodrie. On Sunday, he is likely to be in action for the U17s who can still win their league title. They play Ayr United at the weekend and then face Celtic on the 24th of May in what could yet still be a league decider, depending how other results go.

The midfielder also captained the Aberdeen U20 side in their final game of the season against Dundee. He travelled with the first team for the game against Dundee at Dens but did not feature in the final squad.

Congrats to Dean and we all wish him well during his AFC career.
