SFA Youth Cup – North Section – Second round – The Haughs
29th September 2016
Turriff United Under 20s 0 Aberdeen Under 20s 13

The Young Dons travelled to Turriff for their second round tie in the Youth Cup rather than Keith as the Kynoch Park outfit had been expelled from the tournament for fielding an over-age player when they beaten Turriff in the first round.

Paul Sheerin fielded a strong side with David Craddock in goal behind a back four of Sam Robertson, Kesi Omolokun, Sam Roscoe and Toby Wells. The midfield quartet were Scott Wright, Dylan Thomas, Aaron Norris and Frank Ross with Bruce Anderson and Joe Nuttall up front.

The Dons took the game to Turriff right from the first whistle and opened the scoring after only seven minutes when Joe Nuttall outpaced the Turriff right back Fowlie to race clear and beat keeper Chareza with some ease. The home goalie made a fine stop from Scott Wright shortly afterwards but was unable to stop Frank Ross from making it two on the quarter hour mark after Nuttall had punished some slack defending.

Two minutes later it was three and a second goal for big Joe as he turned neatly on to a through ball to fire past Chareza. After a couple of near things for Turriff, Bruce Anderson got his name on the scoresheet twice in quick succession looping a header into the net on 28 minutes before making it five on the half hour when he powered a fine header into the bottom corner after an excellent Frank Ross cross.

Scott Wright, as expected, was a constant threat and after he had seen a shot rebound to safety off the post his superb back heel flick found the net on 39 minutes to make it 6-0.

Five minutes from the break Joe Nuttall completed a well deserved hat-trick when he nodded a Toby Wells cross into the net. The big striker was having a great game linking play up well and posing a constant threat in the box.
A minute before the break a rare Turriff breakaway saw captain Nikolas Wozniak come close with a fine shot on the turn but it been one way traffic in the first period as the 7-0 scoreline to the Dons testified.

The home side made a couple of changes at the break with Mearns and Kinsella taking the place of Duncan and Aitken.

Nine minutes after halftime the Dons made it an eightsome reel as Aaron Norris powered a fine header in from Frank Ross’s pinpoint delivery. Less than sixty seconds later Joe Nuttall had notched his fourth and Aberdeen’s ninth with a neat finish just inside the left hand post.

Scott Wright was taken out of the firing line and Connor McLennan came on. No respite there for United as the Scotland Under 19 star’s powerful running was another potent weapon for the Pittodrie side.

After the Turriff keeper had produced another series of fine stops the Dons hit double figures on 65 minutes as Bruce Anderson completed his hat-trick with a powerful strike from 15 yards.

Joe Nuttall and Frank Ross were replaced by David Dangana and Chris Antoniazzi for the final 20 minutes or so of what was a very one-sided contest.

United struggled to clear a corner on 73 minutes and Kesi Omolokun took full advantage to add his name to the list of scorers with a tidy finish from close range. Turriff then threw on McDonald for Smart as they continued to try to grab a goal for themselves but Roscoe and Omolokun were rock solid at the back for Aberdeen and kept the home side well away from David Craddock’s goal.

After Aaron Norris hit the bar the Dons made it a dandy dozen on 78 minutes when Connor McLennan created some space for himself in the box before firing in a left foot shot from near the penalty spot. Three minutes the scoring was completed by Bruce Anderson who knocked the ball in after Chareza had made another excellent stop but couldn’t hold the ball.

Turriff deserve a lot of credit for playing the game in a very sporting manner but they were outclassed by the power and class of the young Dons who were thoroughly professional throughout and clinical in front of goal despite the heroics of home keeper Chareza.

The draw for round three sees Aberdeen at home to Hamilton Academical, details of the game to follow in due course.
