Maribor Post Match | Andy on RedTV

29 July 2016

Andy what’s the overriding emotion at the end of that, frustration?

“Yes, definitely frustration, but the boys are holding their heads high. I thought we were tremendous tonight, throughout the whole 90 minutes. We were in their face, I thought we were on top for the whole game, we just didn’t take our chances. It is a fine line in Europe because you only get so many chances. I take my hat off to the lads as the reaction after losing the goal was tremendous. Everybody was delighted we managed to get it back to 1-1. It sets it up nicely for going over there and we’ve got a chance of getting a result”.

As you say it is only half-time in the tie and having seen the performance tonight you can go into that with a fair degree of confidence?

“Absolutely, I thought down both sides with Niall and Jonny they were excellent tonight with their deliveries. Adam and Jay were winning a lot of their headers. If we can match that performance here tonight next Thursday I think we’ve got a chance”.

There was an excellent delivery in the first half from yourself which Adam was really disappointed that he didn’t get a better touch on.

“There was one five minutes before that where the guy has tried to kick the ball across to the other side of the pitch and he smacked it into my face and it went into his [Rooney] path and he missed it, I thought that was a better chance! The deliveries from Shay, Niall and Jonny were tremendous tonight and the boys thrive on that, but I know next week we will hopefully turn them into goals”.

As is so often the case in a European tie one slight error when Novakovi?, and it was his only real sniff of goal all night, but you can see why he has got 31 international goes as he buried it really well?

“They had a reasonable bit of possession in our last third without cutting us open. But yes one sniff and he put it away well, but these things happen in football you are playing against some top, top teams, especially in Europe so we know what to expect. We’ve had a good look at each other so it just sets it up nicely for next week”.

When you go out there it is going to be a proper European tie, it’s a proper stadium. This will be a pretty hot atmosphere out there, but that will lift you won’t it?

“Absolutely, I’m sure it will be like Groningen and Rijeka were. We’ve gone to some really good places in the past and done well. I think the boys are looking sharp, fit and strong. It is going to be a tough atmosphere and they will make it tough, but the boys are good enough to go there and put in a good performance.”
