Andrew Considine Testimonial Match

27 March 2015

ABERDEEN 1 FC TWENTE 2

Andrew Considine Testimonial Match | Pittodrie | 7.30pm

Tonight the club celebrated the career of Andrew Considine and thanked him for 10 years of service and hard work.

In the game itself Aberdeen lost narrowly to FC Twente in what was an entertaining evening at Pittodrie. The 6,500 crowd were treated to a decent 90 minutes as the Dutch side played some good football, as did the Dons. Twente took the lead on 26 minutes when Hakim Ziyech latched onto a loose pass and he finished well. Aberdeen upped the tempo after the break and were the better team but found keeper Nick Marsman in good form. Twente then doubled their lead with a bit of quality on 69 minutes when Shadrach Eghan scored. The Dons however did pull a goal back a few minutes later when Lawrence Shankland scored his third goal in two days, and his first at Pittodrie.  Shankland then could have had a second but Marsman again saved. Towards the end Tony Docherty put on a number of the U20 side who have done so well this season. Also Andrew’s dad Doug and brother Douglas came on to round off a special night for the Considine family.

At half time the fans were treated to an half time match involving a good number of former Dons heroes with Eugène Dadi stealing the show, although Chairman Stewart Milne also put in performance he can be proud of!

Match Report

The Dons this evening lined up with Scott Brown in goal, Daniels was at right back, Clark Robertson left back with Andrew partnering Taylor in central defence. Jack and Robson were in midfield along with Low, Driver and Rooney with Goodwillie up front.

The early stages were fairly quiet with little attacking threat from either side. Clark Roberson put over a good ball for Rooney and just after 20 minutes the Dons won their first corner which Robson swung in but the ball was cleared. Similar to the last time FC Twente were here, in 2013, there was plenty of good slow patient build up play from the Dutch side. There were also a few tackles flying in which is sometimes needed in these games to get things going! Barry Robson as usual was treating this game as serious as any he had played.

The first real chance came when a good ball in by Low almost found Rooney be he could not get his head on it. Then on 26 minutes the visitors took the lead. It was a good finish by Hakim Ziyech. Roberton’s cross field pass went astray and was picked up by Ziyech. He had space to run into and then his low shot from the edge of the area was angled into the corner of the net past Brown. Two minutes later a half chance for David Goodwillie but the defence charged down his shot.

On 32 minutes Robson’s corner was flicked on by Taylor but cleared off the line. Five minutes later a good passing move set up Robson but his shot from distance just went over. Then Considine’s header from a corner was gathered by keeper Stevens. On the stroke of half time Twente won their first corner.

HT

At half time Rooney and Taylor were replaced by Shaughnessy and Smith.

The game was slightly more open in the second half. Clark Robertson cracked a shot just past the post before Andrew Conisdine’s header just went wide. It was a decent enough chance for the defender – it certainly would have been nice to see him score! On the hour mark Brown was called into action and had to make a good save to keep out Van der Heyden.  On 59 minutes Shankland and Logan came on for Low and Goodwillie. Then on 66 minutes Daniel Harvie comes on for Andrew Driver. Daniel was away with the Scotland U17 team last week.

Good play by Logan and a decent cross brought the crowd to life midway through the half. Shankland was just ruled offside. Then Logan and Shaughnessy combined down the right but the keeper smothered the ball. Aberdeen continued to look the more threatening but on 69 minutes the visitors grabbed a fantastic second. Chris David spotted the run of Shadrach Eghan and he played a delightful chipped through ball which Eghan headed into the top corner. A really good goal.

A minute later Shankland tried a lob that was not far away, a minute after that a Jack shot from outside the area produced a very good save from sub keeper Marsman. But then on 73 minutes Aberdeen pulled a goal back from the resulting corner. The ball fell kindly to Lawrence Shankland who produced a great finish on the turn. His first goal at Pittodrie for the senior side and yesterday he scored two goals on his debut for the Scotland U21s.

The goal lifted the home side and on 78 minutes more good keeping by Marsden who took the ball for a dribble after coming right to the edge of the area to claim a cross. The keeper impressed during the second half.
On 79 minutes more subs. Langfield came on for Brown. Also Kieran Gibbons and Frank Ross came on and Daniels and Robertson went off. On 84 minutes Shankand went close to getting an equaliser but Nick Marsman produced another very good save. The final chance came on 88 minutes when a powerful shot from Robson was tipped over by that man Marsman.

In the final few minutes there was a very special moment when Andrew’s father Doug came on the pitch and also his brother Douglas. A back line of Considine, Considine and Considine! It rounded off a very enjoyable evening.
