RGU Placement Students Make an Impact at AFCCT

20 February 2015

Two 3rd year Applied Sport and Exercise Science students from Robert Gordon University joined the Aberdeen FC Community Trust team on a six week placement at the start of January.

Aimee Spalding and Kiana Brown were both keen to gain experience working with a variety of populations and felt that the Trust offered the perfect opportunity to develop their interest in these areas.

Kiana said “Everyone at the Trust has been really welcoming and made us feel part of the team. All of the programmes we have been involved in have been really enjoyable and given us a wide range of opportunities to use some of the knowledge we’ve gained through our course.”

During their placement Aimee and Kiana have been involved in the organising and running of various AFCCT programmes. The students have been walking all over the city with participants from the over 65 ‘Get Outdoors’ programme and taking a look at some local history during ‘Active Reminiscence’.

Aimee said “Working with the Over 65’s has been a positive experience for me, seeing the support that is now available for them and the increased participation in the programme is great. Having had an input in these programmes I am keen to stay involved with AFCCT after the six week placement has finished.”

Aimee and Kiana were also involved in the TACC FC ‘Footy Tea’ and ‘Breakfast Club’, where pupils from Seaton Primary receive an hour of coaching from AFCCT staff and are then provided with a nutritious meal from the chef at Pittodrie. The programme helps provide the children with positive role models of how to behave in social situations and during meal times.

Technogym sessions have also been included in the placement timetable where over 65’s participate in a hydraulic gym circuit. Aimee and Kiana have been delivering some different warm ups and cool downs to challenge the participants.

David said “Kiana and Aimee have been a welcome addition to the Community Trust and have provided an extra skills set with their sport and exercise background. They have engaged in all programmes and every participant and member of staff have thoroughly enjoyed working with them.”
