Aberdeen moved safely into the next round of the Scottish FA Youth Cup this afternoon with a 2-0 victory over Ross County in Dingwall. It was a very professional performance from Paul Sheerin’s side.

The Dons had a number of good chances in the first half and took the lead just after the half hour mark. Scott Wright did really well down the left hand side. He beat the full back before cutting the ball back for Marcus
Campanile who slotted home from about 5 yards. The goal was no more than the Dons deserved and they doubled their lead five minutes before the interval.  

Michael Kelly delivered the ball to the back post from a free kick. The ball was then headed back towards the goal and Scott McKenna forced it home.

In the second half the young Dons chances were more limited. Lawrence Shankland, who made his first team debut yesterday, was through one on one but failed to convert.

More importantly though they limited the number of opportunities for the home side with the central defensive
pairing of Rose and McKenna again in fine form. In goal Robbie Mutch did well and had one very good save with five minutes to go which prevent a nervous finish.  

After the game Paul Sheerin spoke to RedWeb:

“I am delighted we are in the next round. I was also very pleased with the performance and arguably we should have won by more.

“Despite the long journey we started the game well and scored two good goals to put us on top at half time. In the second half we maybe did not play quite as well but we were able to see out the game comfortably. As a unit we defended really well. It was an all-round professional performance today.  

“We had a few players involved today who have been on the fringes so far this season. Young Sam Robertson came in today and did really well. Marcus Campanile has also had to wait for his chance (with overage players being involved in the league games) but he has a great attitude and was rewarded with his goal this afternoon.

“The more experienced boys also did a great job for the team today as well.

“We stressed to all the players before the game how important this competition this.

“It is too long since Aberdeen have been in the final. So we will try and get a little run this year and see where it takes us. We are over the first hurdle and we will see what comes next.”
