Partick Post Match Quotes

What was said in the Pittodrie Press Room after the game

Pittodrie gaffer Derek McInnes was pleased to sign off with a win before the international break.

He said: “We anticipated a tough match against a difficult opponent. I think they are a good side. After the first 10 minutes I thought we did very well but at half-time we were possibly ruing the fact we hadn’t scored. We had three or four opportunities with the ball flashing in front of their goal line. I thought we looked a threat from set plays. I thought we looked a threat from open play.

“We were really happy with how we were mixing our play up, and with the tempo and we asked them for more of the same after the break and we got exactly that”

McInnes was delighted with the quality of the goal that broke the deadlock, but had even higher praise for McGinn’s strike.

He added: “Nicky brought a wee bit of quality to the game with his goal and then Niall bettered it with an outstanding finish. They were two real quality goals, but we had enough throughout the rest of our play for me to be pleased with.

“It was a fantastic reaction after last week. I am really pleased for the boys. It has been a tough week because we wanted to make up for the disappointment of the St Johnstone game.

“Last week I used the word indulgent. What I meant was that we played the way we wanted to play rather than play the way the game required. I though today we mixed things up really well. We got our creative players far more involved. It was a hard working energetic, passionate performance lit up some bits of quality.

“I am really pleased for Nicky. He loves football and he loves his job.

Due to the international break Aberdeen’s next game is at Parkhead in a fortnight away and McInnes emphasised the importance of recording a win before the break, adding: “It can be a difficult two weeks if you haven’t won your last game. We know there’s a lot of work ahead of us and areas we can improve.”

The manager also confirmed the latest injury news. Sadly Skipper Russell Anderson will be on the side-lines for a while. “Russell had a little tidy up operation on his knee yesterday. He will be out for six weeks. He was in more and more pain so we felt we had to do something to get him sorted.”

“Both Willo and Jonny picked up little knocks on Thursday. They both had fitness tests this morning. Willo did not make it but thankfully Jonny did. Jonny had a hip problem before the game and now he has an ankle problem. Hopefully though he will ok for the Celtic game in a fortnight.

Partick Thistle manager Alan Archibald admitted his side had brought defeat upon themselves after the Jags fell to second half goals from Nicky Low and Niall McGinn.

An impressive performance from goalkeeper Paul Gallacher saw the scores level at the interval, but just two minutes after the restart, Dons midfielder Low curled home the opener.

Archibald said: “It was a decent goal but from our point of view, there wasn’t enough pressure on the ball and it was the same story with the second goal. We stood off them and let them play.

“Our ball retention was very poor as well and we spoke about that at half-time and then went out and shot ourselves in the foot.”

A defender himself during his playing days, Archibald was disappointed his side did not do more to stop Aberdeen’s creative players from expressing themselves.

“We brought our problems on ourselves,” he continued. “Aberdeen were the better side, there’s no doubt about that. I was disappointed that we didn’t get in their faces more.

“We know Aberdeen have got good quality from middle to front. If you let the three guys behind the striker play, they’ll cause you problems and we saw that with the two goals.”
