Information for fans heading to Groningen

19 July 2014

The following information is for the Red Army travelling to the Netherlands next week. We will update this page throughout the week if and when we get more information from the authorities in the Netherlands or from our colleagues at FC Groningen.

FC Groningen have asked that the following announcement be made to Aberdeen fans:

FC Groningen expects a lot of Scottish supporters next week during the return of the Europe League match against Aberdeen FC in Euroborg. The away section in the stadium of FC Groningen has a capacity of 1.100 available seats. Only Scottish fans with a valid ticket for this away section are welcome and will be accepted in the stadium.

Supporters of Aberdeen FC who don't have a valid ticket for the away section will be declined access to the stadium and barred access. FC Groningen advises Scottish fans without a valid ticket for the away section not to travel to Groningen next week. There will be no refund for not valid tickets.

Advice from the Foreign Office:

The main advice when travelling around the Netherlands is the requirement to carry photo ID at all times. Given that the UK does not have national identity cards, a valid driving licence is the safest form of ID versus a passport in case it is lost.

Drinking alcohol on the street is not permitted (you will receive a fine).

For general information though, supporters are advised to visit:

Travelling by Train:

Please beware supporters travelling by train may struggle to get the last train from Europarkstation (near the Euroborg) to Amsterdam, especially if the match goes beyond the 90 minutes. We believe the last train out of Groningen is around 22:45. Therefore please check your travel arrangements very carefully.

Train tickets should be bought in advance as the ability to purchase tickets in cash at the station isn't always that easy. You only can buy train tickets on the internet otherwise please note the following:

Train ticket options

You can travel on NS with either a single-use chipcard or an OV-chipkaart. The single-use chipcard is a paper ticket with a chip inside. If you are not planning on travelling a lot, the single-use chipcard is the best option. The OV-chipkaart is the public transport smartcard that is used as a ticket for all public transport in the Netherlands. You only need a single card for the train, tram, bus and metro. Travelling with an OV-chipkaart is usually more convenient if you are staying in the Netherlands for a longer period.

Travelling by Air:

Groningen Airport Eelde is the nearest airport to the ground. Please be aware that the airport closes early and NO flights are allowed to leave after a certain time. Again if the game goes to extra time or penalties you will struggle to get a flight out that night.

Stadium Information:

The stadium is about a 5-10 minute walk from the train station.

Car park 4 is the designated away car park and is very close to the stadium.

FC Groningen provide coffee/tea and a biscuit for free in the away end.

Smoking is permitted in the stadium.

Flags bigger than the 1m squared must have a fire retardant badge on it or proof it is flame safe. Please note as the away end is sold out there will be very limited places to display banners without blocking the view of fellow supporters.

Please look at the pictures below very carefully or the download the following PDF 'Getting to Euroborg Stadium'   If you go to the wrong part of the ground it can be a long walk to the entrance of the away end.
