Pawlett strike earns Dons a point in Paisley

St Mirren 1 | Thompson 55′

Aberdeen 1 | Pawlett 84′

St Mirren Park, Paisley | SPFL Premiership | 7.45 kick off | FT

Peter Pawlett rescued a point for the Dons in Paisley after Steven Thompson had put the home side ahead early in the second half.

A poor first half saw few chances for either side but the second was much livelier and it was the home side who took the lead on 54 minutes with a scrappy goal – Thompson pouncing on a loose ball in the box to fire past Langfield. This was the first goal Jamie had conceded since the first minute of the Motherwell game on the 11th August. In total Jamie went 638 minutes without losing a goal. It was the first goal Aberdeen as a team had conceded since the Hearts defeat on the 24th August.

Nicky Low had replaced Scott Vernon at half time and he lifted the side but The Dons toiled for much of the half and created few chances.

Jonny Hayes saw a decent free kick saved before Magennis replaced Zola and McGinn replaced Smith. The changes made a difference to the Dons who upped the tempo to try and find an equaliser- McGinn crashing an effort off the post after breaking through the Saints defence on 83 minutes. The equaliser arrived courtesy of Peter Pawlett just a minute later as he fired an effort through a host of players into the back of the net. Aberdeen pushed for a winner and with a few minutes left Magennis’ neat back heel sent McGinn through the home defence but he ultimately shot over the bar as the angle narrowed.

Derek McInnes took his side to Renfrewshire to take on Danny Lennon’s St Mirren. Following their five-nil defeat of Falkirk in the SPFL League Cup last week, the manager made 2 changes to the side that performed so well in that game with Scott Vernon and Andrew Considine replacing Nicky Low and Clark Robertson. Niall McGinn and Russell Anderson returned from injury but found themselves amongst the substitutes. The full line up was:

Aberdeen starting XI | Langfield, Shaughnessy, Hector, Considine, Reynolds, Jack, Pawlett, Smith (McGinn 74′), Hayes, Vernon (Low 45′), Zola (Magennis 63′)

Substitutes not used | Weaver, Anderson, Robertson, Wylde,

St Mirren starting XI | Dilo, McGregor, Goodwin, McGowan, Thompson, Newton, van Zanten, McGinn, Mair, McLean, Kelly

Substitutes | Cornell, Naismith, Bahoken, Reilly, Caprice, Harkins, Teale
